60 plus mpg daily commute car recommendations

Hi Folks,

Need a daily commute car which averages combined 60 plus mpg. Any recommendations? No preference to new or old car. Came across a Fiat 500 TwinAir on a local newspaper. Figure wise looks really good combined 68 mpg, 1120 deposit and 37 months £169 but the car it self looks how shall i put it very girly (no offence to ladies on the forum). Looked at Vauxhall Corsa but combined mpg is below 60. Mini looks pretty good but slightly on the expensive side. Anything else?

Cheers

Diesel Polo +/- bluemotion?

But isnt the savings on fuel going to be massively outweighed by running two cars?

I doubt you will achieve those figures on the 500 TwinAir TBH.

VW Bluemotion Diesel would be a good buy as DrNick has said.

I don't really want to put all that miles on my zed to be honest, it will stay as a weekend cruiser. Thanks for the suggestions fellas.

I was temp driving a 2008 Toyota Yaris 1.4 D-4D T before my Z4, consistently got 60-65mpg. It was an auto so you'd be looking at a few more mpg in a manual. Not going to set your world alight but they're incredibly reliable.

Just bought myself a C2 Hdi for 2k. Was a bit messy, no SH but hpi snd vCar clear. Engine is a peach, Potters around with ease. Returned 78mpg to Cornwall and was pretty comfy for me (6' 3") over 320 miles! Returned 81mpg from Sheff to Manc over snake pass!

Very French though... More rattles than a particularly angry rattlesnake. Brakes shocking, non vented discs!! and handles like a boat! Surprisingly fun Though ;) Makes the Zed feel special too :)

SGRG, for the last 3 years I have run a Nissan Micra 1.2 (had to get a petrol one not diesel). I can put up with the stick I get. Bit small though and I've done 31k in it. What is your commute, how long?

I have been looking for a few months now because the Micra runs out next month, and there is very little about at a similar price, currently paying £159 a month incl VAT.

Pre-2007 Fabia vRS: easily capable of 60mpg, even my wife manages 58mpg or so in hers all on b-roads and town driving commute. Plus you'll struggle to get it under 45mpg even if you cane it everywhere. On top of that, it's actually really enjoyable to drive and has decent residuals.

Couple of Toyotas are catching my eye...just had a look at the IQ and i think it looks quite nice...figures are pretty good as well.

Did have a look at C2 as well...seems alright.

My commute will be about 90 miles total per day. I guess it's not that bad.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Might use the zed at least until August and look at getting Toyota IQ around then. Lets see how it goes.

My vote also goes to the Skoda, a guy at work has one, which admittadly is chipped so only does about 50mpg he says but it goes like the proverbial off a shovel, I was amazed at how good it was.

Plus its dirt cheap to insure and as someone has said the residuals are very good

It really is an underrated car - I know some of the motoring press talk it up, but it's even more impressive than that. I thought 130bhp wouldn't be enough so previously bought the Ibiza Cupra TDI (same car, 160bhp), but now that my wife's owned a Fabia vRS for a year or so I rate the Fabia a better all-round car. Better mix of performance/economy, better ride although a bit softer than the Ibiza. The OP really should have a look (and ignore badge if that's an issue).

I've just bought a 10 year old Pug 306HDI for £980 and it's currently returning about 720-740 miles to a tank (55l - same as the Zed) which is 59mpg :-)

In the past month I've done 1500 miles in it, which would've cost £430 in the ///M! It's only cost £151 in the Pug...that's a quarter of it's purchase price paid already :driving:

Oh, and it costs £137 per year to insure :-)

Lot of love for the skoda in here. Looking at few on autotrader at the mo. Again appreciate the feedback fellas.

You'll certainly find cars that'll give you better mpg than the Fabia, but they'll be nowhere near as fun to drive. The Skoda's a good compromise but I guess it depends if you want to forego more fun in pursuit of more mpg. If you're searching, have a look for the final editions (around 07-plate): dark blue metallic, usually leather interior and tinted rear windows as standard.
