6 year old battery - Jump start or replace?

I thought push starting was a NO NO these days. :?

So did I, especially for cars with catalytic converters.

Cj - i'll post pics on Monday when it's finished and I'm off nights!

disadvantage of having an auto, i can't bump mine if this ever happens

i've never heard you can't bump modern cars?

Think if you bump start regularly you'll knacker the catalytic converter. But once should be ok..... I reckon anyway

I'm no mechanic but can't see how it will knacker the cats? I look at bump starting as using the clutch/gearbox to do exactly what the starter motor normally does to turn the engine over?

my thoughts exactly

I was also told recently that you shouldn't jump start another car with the 'donor' car engine running as it could fry the ECU? :?

all you are doing is putting 2 batteries in parallel so would have thought it would not be a problem

Agreed, but if you have the car running it apparently will send a current 'surge' - its not the volts but the amps that cause the issue.

Apparently its to do with un-burnt fuel being deposited in the CAT, then ignited once the engine starts?

does the ECU not just draw the current it requires?
Don't know, but the manual agrees - states that before jump-starting you must:
  • - Check the other vehicle has a voltage of 12V and approximately the same capacity rated in Ah
    - Switch off the engine of the donor vehicle
    - Switch off all consumables in both vehicles
It also states you should use the jump-starting connections, not the battery...

if there is un burnt fuel in the cat its still there if bump starting or battery starting

i'm not arguing lol, just questioning

Ditto - it seems a bit of a grey area, would like to know definitively one way or another before it happens! :D

i have recently jumped started a vw lupo several times from my vw golf and i have had no issues at all

Check out this advert - not the inflated price, but the jump start comment

Looks like a calculated risk, even if you follow the guidelines
