Just thinking is it time for a change ?? if I was to go for 4 seats a 435d comes to mind has anyone went down this road ? or even driven one ? The looks and the BHP tick the first boxes. Any views or advice would be much appreciated.

The wifey has a new 435d xdrive we got a few months ago,its bloody brilliant
435d is a tremendous car. Only available in xdrive which to my surprise is very good. Bmw got it spot on. My wife test drove one for a week & loved it. Went to order one & one of her colleagues was ordering same car, she ended up with a 640d. Similar engine & what a engine it is. Power & torque is unbelievable. Along with mpg I would say it's perfect all rounder. Not a sports car but more power than most zeds. It all depends what you want. Would recommend getting a extended test drive & see if it's for you
A good friend of mine had one and he absolutely loved it, I'm not sure bmw needed to go xdrive with it though because the same engine with only rwd in a 640d doesn't have any traction issues(only seen the traction light flash once in 2 years).
In saying that my old E90 330d the traction light used to flash up like a Christmas tree! So the chassis on the smaller BMW's probably don't cope as well with the Torque.

Great car all round. Apart from its a diesel so the excitement is totally different than a high revving petrol engine. Some people love the shove but sadly I got bored of mine and changed it for the ZMC.
I mean - rather than starting a thread asking 435d owners to rave about the car they clearly already like and are biased towards (that's like going in the M section and asking what people think of the Z4MC), perhaps you'll get more objective responses if you give your requirements and some idea of what you're looking for and going to use it for?

I don't know, I think the responses are pretty objective... as far as the engine goes it's a beast... for most people the added torque you get from the diesel will make it feel incredibly powerful. I had an S5 which I swapped for a 3.0 bi-turbo A6 (as we now have a small passenger and dogs to take with us) and the stats are pretty close. Feel-wise the A6 feels faster and the low level torque is far more "useful" for road driving.

It's like tripadvisor - there maybe 100 5* reviews, but the useful ones (and the ones you read carefully for snippets of info) are not the ones who can't say a bad word. Granted a few have mentioned "it's a diesel, not a sportscar" which i think is relevant for a Z4 owner to consider, i said it myself, but i'd consider that a no brainer.
Thanks for the replies much appreciated. I would of course like a sports car but nothing seems to ring any bells in my price range and age of the car bracket Audi TT aside. I would love a Cayman but I'm looking at maybe a 2/3 year old car without high maintenance costs or repair bills. So I started thinking 4 seats and came up with the 4 series I could go for the petrol as I would miss the rev range that offers but the diesel seems a better all round choice. I'm not expecting a full on driving experience but it looks the part goes well and handles a bit better than a 3 series (from what I've read ) any other suggestions would be helpful.

I've got a 340i touring and after a drag race with a 535 gt there's no difference in the performance , I was slightly slow off the mark and still in comfort , but there again , he may have been too . I only got the better of it over 90 , that said mine sounded much nicer :lol:
If it makes any difference daily use returns 33mpg and the only time I re set the obc it returned 36mpg through Germany and France , mainly 85mph but I was on the autobahn for a little while too

I'd assume some insight into the cars costs, niggles and gripes are handy for making a balanced decision. I don't think anyone doubts a BMW diesel in *35 guise is going to be rapid. IF you're doing a tonne of motorway miles diesel makes sense, i think petrol has a lot to offer if you're after more engaging engine and noise.

^^ exactly. Noone would knock a fast BMW diesel, they are brilliant cars in their own right. The paper stats are on par. But Jimmy is making a good point that the overall feel and engagement of a petrol engine is a different experience that many prefer. I have owned both types of car and overall I would sacrifice a little on mpg to gain a lot in overall driver reward and feedback. But its a personal view for everyone.
I mean what is there to say about a 435d that people don't already expect?
