For me people like the 35d/40d engine for its economy/performance mix but I doubt very much that anyone could love it's engine.
A diesel engine is very much a one trick pony and they sound absolutely pants at idle, and are pretty crude sounding when moving off at low revs too.
What impresses me about the 640d is that it weighs 1800kg and does 0 to 60 in 5.3 secs yet returns 40mpg.
I have a 330i which has a nice smooth engine but it's much slower yet weighs roughly 300kg less and only does 27mpg, so I can understand why the diesels are popular for sure.
