410 Miles to a tank of fuel. Is it a Z4 RECORD?

...might not use fuel while coasting, but coasting with the clutch engaged will give you engine breaking aswell as rolling resistance, if you coast in neutral you will coast a lot further... try it out for yourself

I did a short while ago on about half a tank and seemed to get 45mpg out of my type-r, but haven't kept it up because you can't do it on busy roads and I don't know how much wear I'm adding to the clutch, however, I think there are definite benefits to had if it can be automatically actuated (rev matching etc)

Never mind that, look at the temp. 14 degrees. Ahhhh, the good old days. Brrrrrrrrr!
Never mind that, look at the dust/dirt/muck/crap :poke:

Honestly it wasn't as bad as it appears, just the flash on the iPhone......honest gov

i have my computer down to -- and then still did another 5 miles... filled up 52L so still 3 L left in the tank!

Had over 420 miles at the time, so i would say running it till it dies 430 is possible.

Looking at the figures 410 miles done 50 litres used and I still had 5 litres left which would of given me another 37 miles giving a possible 450 miles on a tank of fuel. That's nearly as good as my son VW polo 1.2 he's only getting 40 mpg :D

If you coast with the clutch engaged the engine will not demand any fuel so infinite mpg, but you will have engine braking so will also slow down.

Coasting in neutral the engine will be idling so still drinking fuel, but no engine braking.
You have to decide which is best for each scenario.

Not sure if this is true of auto boxes though as I've no experience!

My average right now over the last 2 months is 21mpg but my daily commute is a short and snappy drive so that's expected plus I just love the noise of the engine in the higher revs far too much ;) seems to do 35-40+ on a long motorway drive.

42.8 mpg based on the 140 mile journey home when i first picked up my zed, i was very impressed at the time :)

However it struggles to reach 27 mpg these days... :driving:

3.0si coupe

Must admit I had similar mileage 6 months ago when I brought car back from down south (I live in Lancashire) not around 27-28 no motorway and mostly stop start driving (missus only lives 10 miles away)

I can go the other way this week.
The traffic has been so bad round Stoke with so many accidents, road closures etc that I have spent literally hours stuck in jams this week. Been late for every day at work and had several cold dinners. :headbang:
No stop-start on my wee beastie and I've managed a whopping 170 miles on 42 litres. :(
I dread to work out the MPG......
Is this a record?

That EUROPE price was expensive - try finding a Shell station in a big town or if going East go via the Netherlands, fuel's cheaper than that.

Otherwise to achieve that kind of MPG, I hope you took along a book to read on the way

The things you read on here

in normal circumstances, if your ignition is on and your engine is turning, you are burning fuel

Filled mine to the brim before heading up to Liverpool yesterday. Clocked up 355 miles with the trip computer saying I have 20 miles left. Doubt i'd ever get to the 410 mile mark though.

I did 476miles to a tank in the States, if there would of been more gas stations about I probably could of topped 500.

That would seem the case, but modern engine management stops the fuel when you are coasting (downhill with foot off of throttle, gear engaged for example). Have a look at the instantaneous mpg whilst your doing this. I can't seem why bmw wouldn't do this when all the other car manufacturers are (and have been for at least 10 years).

Tom. We all know you reset the computer coasting down a hill then took the pic quickly! :)
When did this forum turn into the BMW hyper-miler forum?

I think there are two discussions here -

- Actual mileage achieved

- Projected mileage (which is worthless...)

Lets see some more 'actual mileage' please

What's the best milage you have got from a tank fuel? On my recent Europe trip, I filled the car up in Toulon after just getting off the ferry from Corsica. I drove up through France via Sisteron/Grenobe at Grenobe I pasted on fuelling because of the price 192 euros. Heading for Avallon I was next able to fill up at Autum having pasted 2 closed stations and with only 23 miles showing on the computer I had done 410.2 miles

I filled up using 50 litres divided by 4.5 = 11 gallons = 11 into 410 = 37 mpg
Scary at the time, but great! for a 6 cylinder engine

You came very close to my house, which is near Autun in SaƓne et Loire. If your ever coming this way again, let me know, as you're welcome to call in for a break and a chat.

PS That also goes for anyone who's visiting or passing through this part of Burgundy

I recently got around 700 KMS (cant remember exactly) on my recent trip from The Sunshine Coast in Queensland to Orange in inland New South Wales. This was in my 2003 2.5 with only a 5 speed gearbox. And I wasnt exactly going slowly. On the same trip my odo read 123456 in kms which i thought was cool.
