3rd Car & here we go again with the O2 sensors!

Just when I thought I was getting away with it on Z4M number 3 error code P2414 just came up. So glad I bought a Scan Gauge when I had number 2 as here we go again! What is it with the O2 & lambda sensors on these cars? This car only has 22K on it.

Just seams odd I have never had this on any other car I have had, then 3 X Z4M's in a row all with the same fault. Hang on, I did have this on a 360 Spider. Once, but the whole car was constantly a pain in the arse.

I've never had a problem with my O2 sensors, so in the spirit of Xmas would be willing to do a straight swap.

More seriously, how often does it get driven & how far, because with only 22k on the clock sounds a bit of a garage queen. Good excuse to go on a long road trip.

To be fair it's a 2008, so ~4000 miles per annum. 300 miles per month isn't exactly a garage queen.

Where do you fill up? Always at the same garage?
Use Super Unleaded?
Our old 330Ci was quite fussy about what it drank.
It also threw the emissions light if you pressed the throttle while starting.
I'm sure that after your third car with the same issues that you've already swapped petrol stations etc, but the throttle press while starting took me a couple of years to notice, and another few weeks to stop doing it!

It always gets BP ultimate. it's a daily drive bought in late 2012 with just 5K on it, it's had some good runs as well. Perhaps it didn't like the nice new set of 8 carbon fibre badges I fitted to it for its Christmas present. oh, and I never touch the gas when starting it.

A new error code for today. P2195 O2 Sensor Signal Stuck Lean. Does it mean the sensor is faulty because after clearing the code it it has not come on again after 20 minutes, or is the engine stuck running lean, or something else? Any thoughts peeps?

What are the symptoms of an O2 sensor failure? I've definitely had one replaced but I can't recall what led me to take it in to the dealer.

It could be that you've got an air leak somewhere in the intake/exhaust system which is causing these faults. You should check that all your intake/exhausts fittings are properly firmly attached.

Never had any symptoms, just the annoyance of having the yellow engine fault light come on.
I don't remember having that, but I suppose I must have.

I've had both mine replaced, the car doesnt like short,stop/start journeys at all I always let mine warm up for 10 mins before I go to work coz I only do a mile before I stop at a shop. I find this helps immensely especially on the 2nd start up coz the engine is warm then and the cold start/richening valve doesnt squirt too much in and flood the engine. When this happens the lights on dash come on and the engine revs itself and you cant drive it with a heavy smell of petrol. Switch off for few minutes and its ok then.

That's worth checking, thanks for that idea! :)

Still not fixed this yet, but I have noticed it always comes on about 2 minutes after starting the car then it's fine for the rest of the run. Wonders if could have anything to do with the EMISSION CONTROL-AIR PUMP? Don't these only run for about the first 2 minutes then shut off?

Any thoughts Guys?

In my S54 documentation (source BMW training program) I could read:
"Secondary Air Injection is required to reduce HC and CO emissions while the engine is warming up. Immediately following a cold engine start (-10 to 40°C) fresh air/oxygen is injected directly into the exhaust stream. The temperature signal is provided to the ECM by the Air Temperature Sensor in the HFM. The ECM provides a ground circuit to activate the Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay. The relay supplies voltage to the Secondary Air Injection Pump. The single speed pump runs for approximately 90 seconds after engine start up.
* Below -10º C the pump is activated briefly to “blow out” any accumulated moisture."

If you get a code after 2 minutes it could also be linked to the delay after which the lambda sensor reaches its dew detection (all lambda sensor are heated in order to prevent short-circuit due to condesation of the exhaust gas on the sensor tip after cold starts).
