3D Printed dual bottle holder for the E89

Afternoon folks,

I spent some time this weekend designing a twin bottle holder to go behind the net in my E89 as there wasn't anywhere to safely put our Yeti bottles.

I am not a designer by any means and this is what I can do with my rudimentary modelling skills and tinkercad. I do however a good 3D printer and so ran off a sample. I've just used PLA for the sample, once I'm happy it'll be printed in PETG-CF. I will add Velcro to the bottom to secure it down. There is an oddments tray at the front for pens, cables or whatever.

There is a ring that could be added as a TPU gasket if the bottle rattles around, so far not needed. I've added a bit of an air relief as when putting the bottle down it would trap air as it's a tight fit.

If you have a 3D printer then please download the file here: https://www.printables.com/model/915039-bmw-z4-e89-double-bottle-holder-for-yeti-12-18oz-b

Please provide any feedback if you do get to try it. Remix culture is encouraged but no printing and reselling.

Cool idea! Looks like it might take a while to print though - how long did it take, and what sort of infill did you use?

Could you post a wider field-of-view picture of where this sits in the cabin?

I use a Bambu P1S and it took under 3 hours for this sample piece. I used lightning infill (50%) as it's just a proof of concept at this point so didn't want to waste too much filament.

I've just sliced it with my idealised settings (0.28mm, adaptive layers, 15% cross hatch infill, 4 walls) and it was just under 9hrs in PETG-CF.

With a 0.6mm nozzle and 0.42mm layer height it makes it 5hrs 20.

I'll get some more photos

That is a very nice printer! I am surprised you use tinkercad with that sort of equipment haha - ever considered using Autodesk Fusion? It is still very approachable, but much more capable than tinkercad and has some other interesting features built in. I believe it is free for hobbyists? (or it used to be at least...)

That is very impressive! Even for the sample piece, mine would likely have taken 3x that amount of time...

Yes I have, it's just finding the time to learn it to be honest. Tinkercad can also be used anywhere and that is very useful. There are so many good designs that it isn't essential to know the more complicated software packages.

I've been through a Wahoo FlashForge IDEX clone, Ender 3s and the P1S is very quick in comparison. My previous Ender 3 S1 Plus did excellent prints, just slowly :D

Here's so more pics

I am considering adding some additional feet to the net hold downs just either side.

Looks very nice!

Understandable - Fusion might very well be too much for what you need to be fair. Fusion is a great gateway into CAD - it is what I first started using when getting into DIY engineering bits and bobs but have since moved more towards Siemens NX for the more serious bits and bobs (very overkill for this sort of thing but great for modelling for proper engineering applications).

Interested to see future iterations of this!

Thanks, I have installed it and done a very basic design with it. I just don't know to start with something like this. I need to spend more time on Youtube to learn. Also tinkercad works with the way I contextualise stuff, but I realise I need to do things differently to really improve. We use NX at work and it looks complex!

When designing something like this, I like to set out a few bullet-points of criteria a design has to meet (i.e., big enough to fit a Yeti flask, solid enough that when I am driving like Colin McRae the holder doesn't move, easy to access etc. etc.) and then make some very rough sketches of any ideas I might have. This might also include the main dimensions (with size of the cavity the holder is fitting into, diameter of opening for the flask, draft angle of the flask if I want a super snug fit etc.) and work from there. It will take time, but with practice can allow you to solve problems like this much more easily in the future.

If you want any CAD tips in the future, I can try to help (not that I am CAD-Jesus or anything but might be able to help)!

I learnt CAD by pissing about with it - I recommend you just jump in and learn by doing!

Great stuff..a whole new world …I wish I had the articulation of my limbs to use it  :tumbleweed:

Careful, or you could be diving into another financial black hole
