35iS - project update

FMIC..? The intercooler yes? If so will it be a thicker core or is it bigger overall, ie, taller, wider?

Yep, stands for front mounted intercooler.

Probably go with this http://www.wagner-tuningshop.de/#catalog/bmw/bmw-z4

hi stuartinzg
a great post I have got the same exhausts tips on my 35is they are m4 tips that fit straight on once you cut the old
crappie tips off .havnt got any pictures but they fit perfect ,
I will be doing the diffuser on the rear the same as the mirrors when I get time .
keep the photos coming

Interesting that the m4 tips fit...bugger. Might be less work, oh well ! They aren't the same as the x6 ones are they?

I'm changing all the silver to the maserati colour, I don't like the OEM, and gloss not matte. May even do the roll over bars the same black as the car.

Ah the m4 has 4, I forgot, they are smaller than the X6 ones.

This is the X6 pipe. What a bus this thing is compared to our Z's ...

Yeah could'nt think what the FM stood for.

The new comp one looks good and release a few more ponies as well as keeping intake temps down.

It's going to be a very nice motor when it's done, not OTT, just subtle and good mods, I like your style.

So today was more about brakes and exhaust - not much else was done, final polish tomorrow morning, then the cquartz finest is applied and interior is sorted. Going to be a busy day tomorrow - have pushed the pickup date back until Saturday, which is fine by me.

Diffuser has been sprayed along with wing mirror caps - this paint colour is epic ! High temp clear coat has been used so the brakes will be super easy to clean, the dust will just wash off. They haven't had any issues with this type of paint or clear coat even on their in-house track cars. Something I've never done before when I did it myself on the last car.

Also on the discs and rear calipers - front were done and look great, but forgot to take a picture

Then we decided to tackle the exhaust, so the bumper part came off, leaving us with this

Time to grind

Nice and ugly

Protect the newly ground metal

Doesn't really fit does it ?

Time to get the metal fabricator into the project - they took him away from the gen 1 GTR restoration (sorry !) to sort the pipes :)

Line up the pipe and ensure it will match the bumper lines, then start grinding away until it fits!

Keep grinding, trial and error

Time to get the "bend" on, warm up and bend the metal

Looking better

Test fitment, fits like a glove !

Bolted at the back, looks odd from this angle, but when the bumper is on... should be absolutely perfect - well done to the metal worker, not skills you can get at your average detailer/polishing establishment! I'll definitely be buying a few crates of beers for the team :D

More to follow tomorrow

Make sure you give those rear calipers a good coat of paint, otherwise the rust soon breaks through.
Paint mine annually.

m4 tips was the same size as the old ones that I took off with no cutting or carving look the same as them on your car
it is looking good now

Looking at the paint on the masking tape behind it they are already painted.
Just shitty metal makes it not very smooth.

Yep I did my own E92 last time and just brushed off and cleaned by hand, then put two coats of spray can on, was crap really compared to this, still look better than rust.

The electrolysis process should help in the long run because there will be much less rust residue before painting, then two coats of primer specific for this application, two coats of paint and two coats of clear coat. The guy who did the brakes was very picky and has a real keen eye for detail - he performs the same process on GTR race cars and it isnt flaking off, 2 years of hard use and counting

Had I known ... don't tell them though, I'll get a slap

Although these are slightly bigger circumference than the M4 pipes, if you're into that sort of thing

I think this is only after 1st coat of paint, midway, the fronts I saw today had a lot more paint on them and clear coat, looked a lot better

I'm loving those X6 tips ! , cant wait for final pics !!!

How much were the tips ?

Don't ask... :tumbleweed: £45-£55 (factoring in exchange rate) each side plus cost of doing the mods ! bit daft really when I can't see them most of the time ! But I really didn't want to spend £1500 on a new exhaust when this is loud enough and adequate - especially when the mid cats are removed.

Well I think the extra work was worth it, turned out better than expected.
