35is Depreciation

I want the enjoyment of a low use sportscar i don't want my pants pulling down at the same time
A 35Is is on my "to do" list at some point but only when the prices have bottomed out so i can enjoy it & peddle it on with my cash intact , i personally don't think we are far off that now but a issue most have missed in this thread discussing depreciation is the factor most likely to affect your depreciation is what you hand over for the car in the first instance  those who want a certain spec & willing to pay for it will be hit hard as will those wanting to buy only AUC or with very low miles then start adding to them
Its a interesting topic discussed before & isn't solely 35Is specific , i would say its reflected across the range

Agree with all the points you make mr wilks. Your absolutely right re: buying at the right price. Mine was AUC but just by chance (because of the lack of cars being advertised) at the time of purchase.

You lot talking about retirement and so on.. I feel so young here, I only just turned 26.

I'm 28. This could be part of my issue.

And in the blink of an eye you'll be 56 and wondering where all the years have gone !

Ive always been in the mind set of lifes too short. You have no idea whats round the corner whether it be health or an accident yours or someone elses fault. If you do air on the side of caution and think il buy it then or next year etc it may never happen and will always be in the future.

On a more positive note another reason for buying is that the way tax and the environment is going there might not be too many more years where you can drive them the way we can now. So might as well do it now!

I bought my Z4Mc at 23 and along with the forum some of the best memories of my life so far. I then got fed up of 9-5 and a dead end job at 26 sold the Z and it allowed me to travel the world for over a year and met the GF. Now 28, weve moved from Cumbria to Manchester and have just bought our first house. So in a way the Z has enables some of the best times of my life and wouldn't have changed it and to this day have some great friends that I cant see loosing even tho many have now left the Z world.

Although depreciation is definitely worth considering, memories and what the car enables is just as important to me.

I would never have known that buying the car would have put me on the path I am now.

My view on being an owner of a 3.5iS - I have tried a 2.3 and like some of it - auto was a big mistake, went for a 2.8i great car but sound wasn't there - the 3.5iS is a great car - can be driven on long runs with easy adaptive suspension offers a smooth ride or can be a very able fast car ( with in legal limits of course) :D

In my opinion the 35iS is always going to command a premium over the 35i, but it won't have the classical desriablility that M models have, as it just isn't one. Sure, not many were made or sold, so a nice example with low miles is going to be worth a decent amount to the right person, but trying to work out depreciation is always a difficult task.

I think a lot also hinges on the new Z. If the new model is epic then we could be in for some bad news. For the first year the M40i or whatever the 35iS equivalent is will still be priced way higher, but as the new prices come down (18-24 months) it might need a 10% knock on 35iS values to make them attractive buys.

As for age, Ive only just turned 26 and my life has been a mixed bag. I've gone through some terrible health issues in my 20s but I also had an idea that someone paid a nice wedge of money for. I like the Z4, I have the money, I bought a Z4.

I'll admit that I'm hoping my E89 Halo model, well optioned, low mileage car will be worth a good amount when I come to sell but like others have said, I didn't buy it as an investment. We do only live once, and it's a life that will go by quicker than we'd all like to admit, so I'm firmly of the belief that we should make the most of it. Sure, my car is no 911, but almost a year later it still gives me a massive grin every time I drive it.

Keep that positive attitude

We all have to live within a budget and have commitments, and what some people see as important maybe isn't to others but...
Life is short and you really don't know what's going to happen tomorrow.
If you want to do something, should it be own a particular car, visit a country or live in a particular place, do it if you can, because you may not get the opportunity if you wait.
As for 35is depreciation, I don't think it's going to reach the bottom of the curve anytime soon, you're still looking at nearly new cars being available, and they're depreciating fairly rapidly. Maybe in a few years values might settle.

Cheers, Dave

One things for sure, depreciation or not someone will have to stump up a very large wedge to get mine from my sticky fingers. Especially now that the better weather is looming large.

Halo model low mileage un-modded 35is and manual 35i with all the trimmings will eventually command a premium, but not until the availability has dropped to rocking horse poo levels, reckon 10 years or so?

Like others have said, who cares... although having said that if I'd kept my first decent car, MK1 Astra GTE I could be flogging in on Ebay for £10k now :o

Not slating anybodys car here as I think the Valencia Orange looks great but I wonder in 10 years whether or not this colour will be sought after. A lot of the later cars before the end of production seemed to be getting ordered in this colour meaning colours like black in the top of the range car will be slim pickings.
If I had the money I think I would have specced a good 35IS but in black with black leather. I think this would be quite rare 10 years down the line.
I don't think I have seen a 35IS on here in black with black leather, they all seem to have white or red leather.

You could apply the same of the M cars

Sepang, white and Phoenix seem to command a premium where black are the cheapest options..

I think there's one on eBay but it's a bit boring black on black IMHO
