35is Depreciation

Think the E9x 335i had the N54...

Did the F10 535i have it too,maybe the N55. ?

The 35is has a way to go yet... Look how cheap the M cars were about 4 years ago.

umm, oh well. Still, having it in a 'sports car' body is still good I guess.
From wiki "which is used in various other models such as the 2011 BMW 335is coupé/covertible, 2011 BMW Z4 sDrive35is, and 2011 BMW 740i."

Lots of good mixed input guys - thank you. I do wish I could be as carefree (or perhaps as wealthy) as some when it comes to depreciation :? .

I love my 35is to pieces.. However after calculating the true cost of ownership it has got me thinking whether I love my Z enough as a 2nd car vs. the running costs.

The largest proportion of my running costs is depreciation hence my original post :D . I am not aiming to make money but is it that strange to want to minimise losses over the course of ownership? Do I think this is possible with what I spent to date + holding on for another 5-10 years with the associated running costs.. Unfortunately no. :(

Its not always about being carefree or wealthy , for some of us common sense has to play a large factor & whilst i understand the vibe of " who cares about the money " or " you don't buy them as a investment " or " just buy them , enjoy them & take what you get at the end " my weekend car is a 3rd car so i'm already playing the losing game on 2 others so whilst i want the enjoyment of a low use sportscar i don't want my pants pulling down at the same time
A 35Is is on my "to do" list at some point but only when the prices have bottomed out so i can enjoy it & peddle it on with my cash intact , i personally don't think we are far off that now but a issue most have missed in this thread discussing depreciation is the factor most likely to affect your depreciation is what you hand over for the car in the first instance  those who want a certain spec & willing to pay for it will be hit hard as will those wanting to buy only AUC or with very low miles then start adding to them
Its a interesting topic discussed before & isn't solely 35Is specific , i would say its reflected across the range
I think Mr Wilks you might have a slightly different outlook if you were to buy a weekend car to keep for more than a few years.
I would imagine that you must have spent quite a bit of cash swapping between various Zeds over the last few years and although you might not have lost much in the sale price after owning, you do seem to sort them all before selling which costs money.
Our Z was bought as a daily car and weekend toy. It was a car we wanted to own and although the purchase price was more than we had ever spent on a car it is something we will keep for at least 5 years (3 and a half have passed already and no real thoughts on changing) Looking at prices now we have probably lost about 6k in our ownership but we have enjoyed it more than any other car with only our bikes beating it which we have had the same bikes for 8+9 years too.
Our X6 was again a car we both wanted and it has not disappointed, it will probably cost us more in depreciation over 5 years than the Z will but its worth it.
We are neither rich or carefree but sensible with what money we have.
Oh, sorry if it sounds like a pop at you Mr Wilks, its definately not, just a different outlook :)

Not taken as a pop at all Nictrix & neither was my post meant as a dig at anyone leat of all yourself , i fully understand that each one of us has different slants on what they buy , why they buy & when they sell , i do it my way cause it works for me & so far have avoided depreciation which the OP as rightly identified as the biggest single expense of 99% of cars we own
We are all fortunate to be able to run 2 seater cars whatever the model as i'm sure the country is full of folks who would love to have one but can't for a variety of reasons

The older I get the more I realise its about toys in the toy box and not money in the piggy bank!

Agree, it's not about the size of the toy box either

Interesting read guys as I picked up my 35is today. Paid less than ÂŁ18k for it with 34k on the clock, and it has to be said "out of a box" condition.

I decided I wanted to trade up from the E85 to the top spec E89 and I feel at that money/performance it's a bargain.

IMHO others will feel the same too. As others have said I have not bought it as an investment but to enjoy with the top down as much as possible and when it comes time to sell you take your chance with the market. That's life.

Not being at all bliasse but life's to short to worry about it

I am looking on the positive if a little biased that they will hold their value at least. Just have to see how long a decent one remains on the market when put up for sale. They are snapped up in no time. Here's hoping

A good pal of mine died quite recently - we had been good mates for 50 for more years - The chap was always very canny with his cash and never had a "posh" car! He was saving his cash for his old age - but never got there - That was my wake up call and the new 35is to replace 22k mile well pampered 3.0l

I had a similar epifany a few years back and bought a 911... never ever regretted it

A couple or so years ago, a fellow member gave me a spin in his 35is and that gave me the itch that got scratched last September!
Just be careful that it doesn't do the same.

And me

There's a phrase up here for those that know what they're doing and it's called 'being canny' - mr wilks has it and so do others . . . .

I'm originally from Yorkshire, so sadly it definitely doesn't apply to me :D

I can relate to that - my Father could have retired early at 60, but continued working and had a major stroke at 61. He lost the use of 2 limbs and was never able to even stand up for his remaining 12 years. His savings were more than 50% of the value of a house, but it did him no good - just got spent on nursing home fees.

Then a cousin of mine died before he was 40 due to a brain tumour bigger than a tennis ball. :(

So I took early retirement at my first opportunity and bought a Z4C! You only get one go at this.

Apologies for the hi-jack OP.

You lot talking about retirement and so on.. I feel so young here, I only just turned 26.

Well, kid, a Z4 at your age and enjoying it ... you're doing exactly the right thing.

Yeah but at 26 you could still drop dead tomorrow so it's best you retire also.
