35i or 35is?

rchamp
I was in a similar situation to yourself. I found a v low mileage 35i DCT (I loved the DCT on a previous M135i and didn't want a manual). I fitted de-cat downpipes (just passed an MOT today), K&N and took the car to rebellion automotive in Chichester(I dont work for them). They gave it a stage 2 remap and its now putting out 385BHP and 450lb/ft or 610NM torque.
Getting 25mpg (no change) and crusing at 80 is quiet in the cab.
I am very happy with the choice I made and absolutely love the car!

Thank you. I'm glad it's not the old Zeppelin builders in Friedrichshafen.

What's wrong with ZF?

The ZF gearboxes in first generation Jaguar S Types had a high failure rate.

And your point is? :poke:

The generation used in the Z4 is two ahead of the Shaguaarrr its the ZF8HP45 released in 2009 vs ZF6HP26 released in 2000

I have to say I think that ZF box is fantastic...why anyone would want a manual when you can have the it all beats me..

Do the auto Zs have kickdown, or is that a Mercedes thing?

They certainly do!
i don't know any that haven't got the feature .
(Re Torque Converter Auto Box)

Awesome, I am tempted by an auto next time around.

Where are people getting 35is cars from? There are only three on auto trader, none in the right colours.

Im guessing they are quite rare?

My point is that Zeppelin Friedrichshafen once made a crap gearbox. From what you say, they don't now.

Your point, as usual, is irrelevant, as the box you're waffling about has never been in a Z4, which is what Pbondar said.

It's like a constant rolling road of stupidity with you isn't it....

I was dead set on having a manual with my first e89, so never test drove the many 30i models that were around at the time.

Got bored with the manual 23 and realised the DCT is where it's at. I'm a convert, especially with the updated paddle shifters on the LCI models, it's an absolute pleasure to drive.

3.5i...........I live in London and use my 3.5i for commuteing and still love a manual although I wouldn't own a manual Range Rover :?

:D

Similar thoughts & dilemma to myself so wondering if the OP ever reached a solution to his debacle :?

Only way is to try both. Dct really is rather good.

Plus, 35is is the best car ever built by Bmw.

Another plus for the manual is, according to BMW, the manual gearbox weighs a rather shocking 80 pounds less than the automatic. (Not to mention an aluminum flywheel could knock another 10-15 or so pounds of weight off the car. Other forums comparing the DCT vs. Manual come up with numbers around 80 pounds as well.

On another note, many have commented that using catless downpipes with the 35i but keeping the rest of the exhaust stock on the 35i creates a nice aggressive engine note.

For me there is also the consideration of adaptive ride :? really wanting to avoid this feature due to known issues & as i'm buying in around the 10plates highly likely they will need attention sooner than later & at £600ish a corner not too appealing
Manual box also appealing especially coming straight from Mroady .
I think as time passes the price difference between the 2 will diminish ( to some extent it already has :o ) as they start hitting 8 - 9 - 10 yrs old then condition , history + miles will prove a bigger deciding factor for many buyers .
