35i and 35is anything I need to be aware of before buying?

Hi guys

I have set my mind to changing my fab E85 Roadster and replacing it with a 35i or a 35is and just wondered if there are any problems I need to be aware of before buying as I don't know much about this model apart from the fact that I want one

Thanks

I did the same thing a couple of years back - swapped a 2007 3.0si for the 35is.

Very different car to be honest - the e85 felt a lot smaller / lighter / more nimble.

The 35is has a lot more power (probably more than it can handle), much better interior, prettier. Solid roof is a big bonus for me. Much more grown up car.

Look out for all the usual stuff when buying, nothing amazingly bad to worry about on the e89.

Big wheels (19" & up) can get cracks in them, runflats are rubbish, check roof works properly & good service history etc.

Thanks for that Matt  I think it will be the 35i I will end up with as that still has much more power than my current car and I have read that the 19 inch wheels can crack which is a bit of a worry so it will be 18 inch wheels for me :)

19" wheels look great especially the 326 type on the M Sport models, but the car rides better on 18" rims imo.
As said not heard of anything major to go wrong on the 35i/is versions. Just check for roof leaks, and water ingress in rear light units. Common problem with the E89.

The usual things go wrong with the 35i and 35iS as they both share the N54 engine from the older 335i... High pressure fuel pumps, coil packs and injectors spring to mind. I think the newer the better as far as this engine goes. The new Z4 took on the engine when it had already been around a bit (I think!) so hopefully there are less issues than the older 335i owners had to put up with.

I had one 35iS for 3 months and it spent a month in the garage with 1 coil pack and two adjustable suspension ECU's 'breaking'. The dealer took it back off me for what I paid (and it is still for sale in Reading). The 'new' 35iS that I replaced it with has been with me 2 months and nowt has gone wrong. Luck of the draw I guess !

I got a second one as I loved the first one - given it was in the dealer for a month of the three I owned it that says a lot about how much I loved driving it !!

Thanks for that I didn't know it had a slightly older engine not that there is anything wrong with that and it's good to know you got another

god what a lucky escape I nearly bought that 35is from cooper reading .but didn't because I did not get that pull to the car if you no what I mean

wow lucky or what

I had 2004 E85 2.2 for 3,5 years. Now I got 2010 sDrive35is and It's great. It sounds greeeeat and much much faster. As said before, it feels much heavier and bigger.

I have some problems with oil leaks from DCT. It was fixed before I got the car, but it's now leaking again. Parts are cheap but labour cost ...not.

Hi

we just picked up our new 35 is last sat

still getting used to it but seems a great car, our one is Melbourne red met, what is great is the 35is gets the louder sport exhaust (10dB lounder) as standard

regards

Wow it sounds like a cracker I bet it looks great in red, are you enjoying it I bet you are

Z4MESSEX I picked my new 35is up 5wks ago same as yours Melbourne Red, I'm not a particularly fast driver but what I really like is the massive torque and as you say the sports exhaust, the sound of which gets even better with a few miles on the clock.

My 30K miles 35iS sounded far louder than my 3K mile one does ... I can't wait - more miles = quicker and louder car

Red is best - Everybody knows that :D

SO8 I wouldn't have thought after 3000 miles the exhaust sound altered much at, all I know it does for the first couple of thousand, probably due to giving it more beans after its run in, did you ever check if someone had done a golf tee mod on it as it was so much louder? just a thought.

Not sure if you are looking at new or preloved....
Have a look at the deals, I got £15k off my 35iS once I added everything I wanted
Don't reckon I could have got a nearly new for much less than I paid and it has everything I want..
Go for the iS if you can, worth the extra few pounds

Whatever you get you are going to love the E89 :driving:

I looked at new as the discounts were big - it was the 4-6 month wait I didn't want ...

Where do I look for the biggest discounts on a new one?

Not that I could justify spending that much on a fun weekend car :)

But it would be good to know where to look to compare.

I got a good price from Berry Heathrow. There is a guy on BabyBMW forum who does deals - TRL is his username. His name is Tony. I was after a price for an M135i and he provided a far better price than other dealers. I got a price for a new 35iS from them and it was a good price. I just didn't want to wait !

Last I looked BMW were offering £7k on a 35i and £9k on a 35iS
That is before any discount that the local dealer will offer.
I know that there is a wait on them at this time; but that is some car for the price!
Have a look at broadspeed and then see if your local dealer will match / or better
