They said its when they are taken off the car, someone is using a screwdriver, when a sucking device or a cloth with a screwdriver would be better.....

Haha thanks mate....mine are OEM, but hoping customer service will cover the cost of them....waiting to hear

That has to be a call to BMW. If so many are failing they must fall under not fit for purpose under the sale of goods act

Tapatalking...

Good luck on that one! The 3 Series 19" wheel crack problem was well documented, even on TV and nothing was done about it. Still no re-call!

Run-flats have an incredibly stiff side wall that ruins the ride, steering, braking and grip capability of the car and transmits more shock to the wheel. We don't recommend them for any car. Conventional tyres with an emergency inflator kit are the way to go.

But surely the might of BMW should know what they are doing design wise? (you'd think!).

I wonder if taking runflats off and putting ordinary tires on a car that has runflats on as OEM would affect a warranty claim in an accident?

Do you mean insurance claim? If so it would be worth checking with your insurance company before making the change, but it shouldn't be an issue. M cars don't come with run-flats...

i think if mine crack, i will just go ahead and get some replicas like these

http://www.cmwheels.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=89

not bad for the price and a lot cheaper than genuine one..... might be even more reliable too :D

Ive looked at them but the front offset Isnt the same as official. The official 313's have an offset of 29 and these are marked as 40 offset, not sure what that means minds you but its not the same

What are the 18" wheels as standard on the 2012 MSport? Are they affected, or is this only 19"s?

The 18" wheels on the MSport are style 325M. For MSport cars the optional 19s are 326M.

18" wheels have more sidewall and as a rule are less prone to damage.

All the 2012 OE wheels:

17" Style 290 --- Standard on sDrive20i and sDrive28i.
17" Style 292 --- Standard on sDrive35i, optional on sDrive20i and 28i
18" Style 293 --- Optional Not available M Sport or sDrive35is.
18" Style 294 --- Optional Not available M Sport or sDrive35is.
18" Style 295 --- Standard on sDrive35is
19" Style 296 --- Optional Many reports of cracking
18" Style 325M -- No cost option on M Sport models, optional for sDrive35is
19" Style 326M -- Optional on M Sport models and sDrive35is

It means they won't fit

Add an 11mm spacer though and you would have the same offset. Not that we ever encourage fitting fake wheels...

they are not the same offset as they are replica wheels and like schitzner says, a 10mm spacer is easy enough to fit.

i've fitted wheels with small spacers before and had no issues whatsoever..... but a personal choice..... dont need them just yet, so not an issue for me

But M cars are designed without runflats and also they are not OEM fitted. Just a thought as insurance companies will find any excuse not to pay these days!

Not only style 326 :(

Tim.

It's been long established 296 have a design fault. If you read this thread it's the 296's that nick moved away from due to cracking and hence his despair when the 326 cracked also.

Apologies I didn't realise, not good, maybe time to try 18s although I prefer Style 326 but not if they develop faults :(

Just done a quick visual check on our new (to us) 2009 Z4 with 296 wheels.

One of the rear wheels has definitely been replaced previously as it has the new style inner wheel profile. Has anyone with the new style 296 design wheels had issues?

I think I'll check all the wheels thoroughly this evening to see if we have any cracks? I'm assuming that this would have been completed as part of the BMW approved used car inspection, but I just want to make sure.

Maybe we should start a register for anyone who's had to replace a cracked wheel, including wheel type, tyre type (RFT or not) and whether it was replaced under warranty.

If I'd have known that so many owners had had issues with the 296 type wheels I'd have negotiated a wheel swap as part of the deal.

When I found my first 2 cracked wheels, after about 8 months, my car was a demo, so the dealer paid for one and I paid for the other. The wheels were not covered by the warranty at that time, but the next time that 3 cracked, they were replaced under warranty....

Don't ask me why but I'm bidding on the 4 x 296 wheels on eBay. Currently at £770. The tyres alone are worth that at the very least, so if I win I will sell the alloys separately....

I also saw those on ebay.

Interested to see what they eventually go for, as even though I love the look of the 296 wheels, I don't want to be continually worrying about cracked rims, so may well sell ours and replace with a set of forged wheels with non RFTs.

SNAP. (or should that be CRACK)

* I've simply purchased a spare rear 296 for a low cost, that way if I've any more trouble with the backs, I can just swap one out. Much cheaper than replacing the lot. (Watch a front one go now!!)

Just dropped into our local dealer (not where we purchased the car from) and the service department did a quick check on warranty claims, our car had the right rear 296 replaced under warranty in August last year, hence the new style inner rim.
