30i and 40i fuel consumption

If you have a 30i or 40i, could you let me know what 'average' fuel consumption you get please? So everyday 'sensible' driving.
The quoted figures for B48 30i and B58 40i are not too different, so trying to get a real world comparison. TA

My work commute is 40 miles each way, mainly motorway with a mile or so at start and end of A road.

My 30i has returned as high as 53 mpg just cruising at 60-65 but generally I can see high 40's if not being silly with the loud pedal.

Take it out of comfort mode and "make progress" and that will drop sharply.

I have no idea what eco pro would give as quite frankly I wouldn’t embarrass myself by switching it on.

Hope this helps.

Mine is M40i.
When cruising (using the standard cruise control) from Sheffield to York or Cambridge at 70mph, the car managed about 45-50mpg.
When driving in Sheffield city, the car managed between 25-30mpg.
Overall for my 4.5k mile so far, the average is about 30mpg which includes two trackdays about 300 miles in total.
During the trackdays, the car managed about 12 mpg.

Never use eco pro so far.

I can't really talk for the Z4 M40i exactly - but have owned a 140i.

My experience is this... mid 20s if "spirited" but not driving like an absolute ****. If the latter, you'll get below 15 easy.
Low 30s for most of your normal "combined" driving - assuming that the car actually warms up.
Low-mid to high 40s on a feathering the throttle type of motorway run - expect higher 40s if in eco mode (embarrassing yourself) and deliberately driving to save petrol.

Reading Scubaregs response, I would say don't expect 53 ever (in the 40i) at 60-65... more like mid to (edit) high 40s.

First, I'd like to say that I don't drive like Miss daisy is a frequent passenger, however I am easy on the breaks and spend a fair amount cruising on a motorway at 70 mph. In the three month and 4,000 miles my ex-works average is 40.1 mpg, the highest journey average was 47.1 mpg where I had a good tail wind and light traffic, it is a remarkable car.

For comparison, same journeys etcetera, my 3.0l e89 average was around 37 mpg.

Interesting to read as an MR owner. So put your foot down track and spirited driving, not that different. may be 10% Bimbling and around town, about 30-35% improvement by my quick reckoning. Interesting. :)

Yeah it's the relaxed driving where the newer engines are so clever with efficiency. Whatever you do with an engine, there's only so much energy you can extract from a litre of petrol so hooning around is always going to be thirsty business.

So far then, with Scubey being the only 30i contributor, there isn't a lot in it. Maybe 5-10% for the B48? Which is what the official figures suggest.

May not be helpful for your purposes but I had a look at mine on Saturday.

I’ve done 4.5k miles and very little of that is what you’d class as normal/commuting mileage. Almost every mile has been for pleasure and that includes 2.5k min on forum runs. The car is always driven in sports mode, speeds have been eye watering at times (on all the private roads we seem to be able to find), cruising speed is around the maximum average speed limit (ish) and the M40i is returning 29.1 over all those miles. Once heated up the car sees the upper range of the rev counter regularly.

Over a longer distance with cruise on I’d expect that to rise significantly as it’s just ticking over at motorway speeds in 8th gear

You think of purchasing a G29 then

I suspect he's thinking of (or has thought of) buying pretty much every car ever made

Two words and the second is 'off'. :poke:
No I am looking to consolidate and merge the Alpina and E89 into a 4 series cab. Looking at a 440i and 430i which share engines with the G29s.

I’m presuming you mean take off? If it is, definitely the 440i because that’s exactly what Kathleen said on the way home on Saturday that she thought we were going to get wings at one point and take off. Funnily enough that was at the exact same moment she pulled her jumper up in front of her eyes which tbh is a VERY rare occurrence. I wouldn’t like to guess what my mpg was at that point

Back to your quandary, the 40i every time IMHO, the ability for fun outweighs the additional couple of Mpg’s

Not sure anyone is interested in your free time but perhaps interested in how you BRAKE..... :poke:

As for a 440i convertible, don’t forget that you’ll be lugging around an extra 300kg so fuel economy will be slightly worse, that being said the B58 is just such a fabulous engine and there is an argument out there that this is probably the greatest six cylinder engine BMW have produced

You can see mine in my signature. I do a mix of motorway, town and country roads. I'm not a slow driver normally and do like a blast of power when safe to do so.
My last 3 Z4 have done the following:
Z4 28i 31.3mpg average over 23k miles
Z4 35iS 28.2mpg average over 45k miles
Z4 M40i 29.4mpg average over 16k miles
