3.0si Tune-up

Well, I've been converted;

Having been dead against power chips / tuning boxes for the 3.0si, I heard about a chap called Jason from BW Chiptune in Hounslow.

He has spent time working on a few 130i's, M3's out in Asia - also working for a few dealerships out there on new cars. He is also all over BMW forums and has a big fan base.

I'm booked in next week, and after running a disapointing dyno of 242bhp last week (poss due to my quad exhaust set-up) he will tweak to get me back up to normal & improve power input /mpg.

The best thing is, my insurance company arent fussed unless the new dyno shows anything above 270bhp which is unlikely.

If you're already at 260 ish bhp he says he can normaly get it up to around 285, but says it's more about power delivery.

Seems like a very genuine, very experienced modern BMW tuner & I shall report back soon!

25 BHP increase for NA. I'd be interested to see the results of this.

Keep us informed of how you get on.

Dan

Jason is a top guy  He worked on my car at the BMW show. I was talking to him about the lack of bottom end power that my 2.2 is producing, Jason suggested that a remap would sort that out and would give me more MPG along with it. I humed and ard abit . he was telling me how some tuners just through a map on a hope for the best which sometime makes the car worse, he then offerd that he would rewrite my cars map, for me to try and if i was not happy with the results he would put the car back to normal with out any cost (try before i buy ) with that i agreed for the work to be done. He then down loaded the map from my car and then set about rewritting the new map asking me how i would like the car to perform i.e how aggresive i would like the car to be and am i looking at out and out performance which would lose the MPG, i didnt wont the mph to go down so left him to it, 2 hours later
i was given the keys for me to test, i can report the car performance is spot on now, no lag in the bottom rev band any more, throttle response is a lot sharper, its like driving a new car :D Indeed the work he has done has deffantly improved the car performance. when i returned i payed the man for a great job done, he told me if i needed it tweaked just to call him, but so fare the car is running spot on, more than happy with the results. on the way home the car returned 36.6 mpg. i filled up with juice at the pod for the trip home to Sittingbourne Kent. the drive was at mostly motorway speed 80 apart from the roadworks on the the M1 and M25.
These guy's are passionate about BMW car's and have a lot of respect in the BMW Community.
Good luck with your car but you wont need it, its will be in safe hands

I'd be interested to see what gains it makes - the new tubby 3 litre BMW engines should make more gains but on an N/A the car will feel more urgent and rev freely higher in the range. Should be a much improved drive.

Sounds good Wills. :)

Will be interesting to see what sort of gains you establish. Will you be taking the car back to the same Dyno? Pressumably this would be the most accurate way to assess any increase......

Be very interested to see these results. Been thinkin about gettin mine done recently but felt it wasn't worth it for the gains stated.

Look forward to seeing the results wills

Guys, please stop believing this rubbish. It's impossible to achieve these results from a tune alone! Around 5bhp is the best you'll ever get unless you start changing components.

wills, what were your results at the wheel?

Happy to be the Guinea Pig!

I'll ask of he's willing to do a forum discount / group buy if results are good. Part of my duty I guess..

Not really as there are so many factors to it and they only estimate the bhp.
Even at the wheel things such as tyre pressure can affect the end result.
The only true way is to take the engine out and do it directly.
Probably the best way is to do it at the hub, but I don't know anywhere that does this.

Also there's how the bhp is delivered across the rpm range. He could 'tune' it so that at say 6k it peaks at 300bhp, but across the other rpm range the bhp is sh*te.

You're better off putting the money into either an advance driving course, parts that improve handling or figuring out why you've lost so many bhp (if you actually have).

As above, I was against remaps on the 3.0si but then came across Jason.

Loads & loads of looking into what this guy does across the world, with gains from the 130i / 330i / M3 & 3.0si has swayed me to go for it.

If you know something I & Jason's past customers dont pls share. Mine's booked in next week.

My pre dyno last week was about 243 and 210 at wheels.

Found this post on ZRoadster that dates back to 2007

I only found this post last night and was nice to see that the guy GEL who posted it had his 2.2 remaped by Jason which sorted his car out over 4 years a go

Good reports for Jason there, I had my car on the roller last year at AMD with results of 180bhp i should book it in again to see what its doing now
i would not expect big power gains from the remap but he has managed to sort out the bottom end lag out whic i think most 2.2 z4 driver will say is were the car lacks performance.

Cheers, hadnt found that post. My main focus is a smoother power delivery, but the added hp is a bonus.

I'm also fitting a K&N filter this week - not expecting any gains but as my current filter is due for replacement, why not..

best way to improve performance ....loose weight !

Or make the other half get the bus..
Good idea !

Hope it all works out ,be very interested to see the improvements.....is your car out of warranty ?

It's coming up to 5 years now, just paid for a BMW / Mondial warranty, if the upgrade causes issue with a warranty claim so be-it, but think it will be ok..
