3.0si remap - The Results (page 4) - Update

I was out in it this evening and I have to say the drive is definitely more enjoyable. The exhaust note sounds 'throatier' too. :driving:

Interesting. The sound is the only thing that has left me a little disappointed with my car. I've tried every variation with the sound generator, but it's either too quiet at low revs and ok at high revs, or nice at low revs and screaming at high revs. 'Throatier' is something I would be interested in

I went out tonight on some of my favourite back roads, and I have to say the difference in performance is very noticeable. My initial feedback (on page 4) was in hindsight quite reserved, however, tonight I really pushed it into the high rev range, and boy does it shift! I also had the opportunity to accelerate from a standing start a few times, and I'd say that this is the most noticeable difference: the combination of the extra torque from the remap and the quicker clutch release meant that I was quicker off the line - and I mean much quicker. It wouldn't surprise me if the mods have shaved half a second off the 0 - 60. All subjective I know, but all I can say it its even more exhilarating to drive :D :driving:

Holy Thread Revival!

Dunno if anyone will be interested, but today I have had the first Map uploaded on the Zed... :D

Amongst other things, mild adjustments were made to Valvetronic, Cam timing, Ignition Timing, Lambda Targets, and crucially the PID target values which control that sodding soft-cut limiter....

This is very much a 'Starter for 10' as it were - I'll be driving the car and feeding back to my mapper who will continue to tweak the map for me to remotely upload, but this might be of interest to some anyway...!

First impressions - the car in general does feel a little more peppy. The exhaust definitely sounds a little louder, and it feels so much keener at the top end. The engine now revs hard to about 7-7.1k with none of that horrid soft-limit rubbish, and it just feels so much more sporty.

Pretty chuffed with the first iteration, but I think the driver's wish map needs a little tweaking as a result of the changes... That, or the ecu needs to relearn the parameters, but the throttle just feels a tiny bit less linear over the first cm of travel. A very minor gripe, but something I'll note down for adjustment in the next map :)

In summary however, whilst it may not be everyone's cup of tea ("Why would you change what BMW have created in all of their infinite wisdom and with their huge development budget?"), I've always felt they left something on the table with the N52B30 engine, and to those sitting on the fence - I would definitely suggest contacting a decent mapper - it can really make the car that much better to drive and a bit more to your personal taste!

Sounds good Ed, are you going to get it rolling roaded at all?

Thanks guys - I'll keep this thread periodically updated for those interested!

Hopz I'm very sceptical of dyno outputs so probably won't bother!

Having read about dyno runs by those who perform them, and the massive variation of the results, so am I now !

Great write up Marlon
From my own experience with remapping I would expect a slightly better fuel economy as well. Not for the first few weeks as you will be busy exploring the loud pedal :driving:

Update for you (9 weeks after the remap) regarding average mpg:
Prior to the remap the car had been stuck at an average 28.2 mpg for months. The average is now at 31.5 mpg. Now whether that is solely down to the remap is arguable, as there are numerous other factors that could have raised the average - but the fact is its gone up not down

A positive result mate the increase in MPG is almost certainly down to the remap. I have always found the same result on previous cars after remapping on both Petrol and Diesel engines

Very interesting read! Thanks for the write up guys, this sounds like something I will look into, I had always been skeptical of NA gains after a remap but sounds like there is a decent bit of tuning to be achieved here.

Just a word of caution about remapping. You will need to inform your insurance company who in all probability will increase your premium. If you dont tell them and you have an accident your insurance will be invalid (if they find out).

from http://www.rstuning.co.uk/

"It’s not one I have tuned before so wouldn’t be able to tell you exact gains. Based on the other 3.0 engine you will see around 10-12hp and similar torque. It’s not going to be a massive difference in power but will be smoother to drive and have slightly better throttle response.

Mapping is £345+VAT which includes the rolling road."

Bit steep - mine was £199 inc VAT. You can get before and after rolling road tests for £60.

yer marlon i thought same,

I know when i had clio they did a group buy and he did it for somet like 250 each. But hes fairly well known and has a good rep.

I know he used to have 2 prices turbo and n/a, guessing its all the higher price now

Hi Marlon,

I have done the CDV delete, have the K&N panel air filter, just changed my oil, the filter and done a diff oil flush. I have been enquiring with various companies about ECU remap, and I'm a bit dubious.

Did you get a before and after readout, and how much did they charge you? The going rate seems to be £195 for a straight chip swap, but only a generic, pre remap, engine performance figure. I am wanting to know my cars actual BHP before and after. Did they do this? If so, I will gladly drive over and give them my money tomorrow!

I'm gonna be having mine done at EcoTune in Glasgow in October. I'll be up that way for a wedding so may as well have it done whilst I'm there. Not really bothered how much it is. I'd sooner have a something I know is done to the absolute best standards possible than scratch around looking for the cheapest or the biggest discount.

I know how a lot of these companies work when it comes to mapping (being from the Industry). The majority of the cheaper maps over here - not going to name names for professional reasons - are written in Israel by a company who've never actually seen the cars they are writing the maps for. Just a few calculations, a power runs to prove gains and off it goes. No logs done, safety protocols over written all sorts.

It was an ECU remap - cost £199 no before and after Dyno for that price.

Presactly, unless you've got someone who's actually got a properly translated Damos, it's inevitably not done properly.
