I used this as a reference point from Yorkie Z:

This is what I was thinking of doing to mine, just removing some of the wadding to make it a touch growlier but to try and keep it bearable on long drives... I'm hoping for somewhere half way between the back box delete and standard... if not i have a friend that lives just outside Bristol :)

on an almost unrelated note, my dad has a Ferrari 512 bb and he cut open the 4 back boxes and took out the sound deadening. because, because, the flat 12 wasn't "quite" loud enough :fuelfire:

Mine is back to OEM now, its surprising how much torque I now have in the low ranges again, specially with the auto box.

Can hot-swap the two exhausts depending on what I fancy, may put the loud one on for forum runs :)

I'd be interested to know if there is actually a considerable difference. I might try a before & after on a rolling road..

Well the auto gearbox has a noticeable difference due to the fact it changes gear at low revs unless in sport mode.

Hi Guys its Ross from Infinity-Exhausts. Very interesting to see the supposed loss of power from the Z4 with back box delete. Couple of questions really as obviously we don't want to sell products that create a power loss.

Firstly was the car Rolling roaded before the back box delete, and then afterwards? and if its was it on the same rollers?or because the M3 was there it was automatically assumed that if the back box was put back on the Z4 it would gain the power back? Obviously cars loose power over time but also a car does not always have the correct Power stated from manufacturers. So this specific Z4 could have already had power losses before the delete was done. What other mods did this car have? Some induction kits will loose power also. Yes N/A cars need back pressure but we figured the centre silencer and cats would be more than enough.

Please note that back box delete is a cheap and simple way of providing more noise, its not to increase performance. We do excellent full custom stainless systems from just £450 that will give you decent performance gains along with the sound and tips of your choice. Or we can simply build a smaller stainless back box with the sound and tips of your choice for £220. All our price's include fitting, Vat and lifetime warranty. We also offer 10% discount on full systems for forum users.

This is not to advertise our company but to show that when we hear these things that we try and sort them out with our customers. Fifal dropped us an email to let us know of the power loss figures on here. We are very grateful for the work we have received on this forum and wouldn't want any of you to think we are taking advantage of any of you. We have a rolling road next door to us so its likely that next time we have a back box delete on a Z4 we will do a before an after run and let you guys know the results.

We hope for future custom from the forum and would like to apologise for any problems caused, We would like to think we are one of the best system makers in the country and when ever we hear things like this we like to try and get in contact and understand the situation.

Thanks for your time
Ross Parker

Its not a back box delete. And i am not sure if i have posted this already??? It sounds slightly rubbish as i had a leak on the join of the new bit and the old exhaust. I have since made proper connections up and welded them on.
The system is stranded from the cat through to about where you would be sat. Then i have removed a small muffler and made my own straight through pipes making a full proper quad. I made up the back boxs sections not that they do that much!! It is a 100% home made by me an d a PITA to do on axle stands on your driveway!!

Bit of a thread ressurection this, but I'm looking at a bit of a compromise on the full backbox chop, but need to know the diameter of the exhaust... Assuming it's all the same diameter throughout? I'd be much appreciated if someone can advise :) Thanks in advance!

50.00mm external diameter from where I measured (before and after the centre silencer)

Thanks very much :) hopefully once my ninja plan has come together I'll be able to post some interesting results up :)

I hate to revive an old thread but can't seem to find a definitive answer, so if possible can someone answer my questions on this as I am seriously contemplating this..

On the 3.0si (N52) engine, did anyone get the rear box removed and actually loose power?
Also just how loud is this? has anyone near Surrey / London / Sussex got this on their 3.0Si if so, is it possible for me to pop by to have a listen as vids do not seem to do this justice.
And also, what is it like to live with? for example my car is a DD and I'm doing around 300 - 350 miles a week.. just how bad is the drone?

I'm desperately wanting to unleash that lovely 6 but none of the exhaust systems I've heard actually sound decent (Other than the Caparo one) which seems to be mega £££.

Cheers,
Dan.

It's loud, drones & you lose low down torque but I'd completely recommend getting it done.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2PocTOJa6U Best to listen on some good speakers

Dan I took mine out for a hoon last night - it had me giggling like a schoolgirl :P went though the high walls in Petworth.... Dear Lord the pops and bangs!

I honestly can't say I've noticed a drop in torque low down really... It also might just be the placebo effect of having more noise but it felt like it had more at the top end too...

Is removal/delete still the best option? On another thread Terryvision suggested drilling into the rear of the box http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=75210
I am looking at getting more sound from my exhaust but am unsure of what is best for me. Infinity have quoted £150 for the delete although have heard from other members that it is too much and many have later reverted to stock.

You not going to see Matt? Mines definitely got a deeper note now and combined with my AFE intake it makes enough noise now :D

Just driven back from Infinity Exhausts - Bristol, with the straight through back box replacement :driving:

OMG what a noise       glorious :D

I'll try to get a few pics and a sound clip :scratchhead:

Hi,

I've had my z4 for a month now but have seen plenty of videos on youtube of the backbox delete but i can't make my mind up between that and the secondary cat delete for noise. Have you noticed much loss of power with the back box delete?

cheers,
James

I'm also deciding on what route to take. Quick Car Reviews on YouTube has made me seriously think about just deleting the secondary cats. As long as it doesn't sound like a Corsa with a powerflow exhaust I'll be happy.
