Not going to be everyone's cup of tea I know, but for those interested in getting a bit more sound, I hope this may be of use!

So in my quest to get a *bit* more noise out of the N52 engine, I must have had a rush of blood to the head or something and agreed to remove the backbox from the Zed. It started off as just removing the middle resonators but eventually agreed that it would probably be a waste of time and not actually give much more sound if any so went straight to chopping the back box. Due to basically zero info on the interwebs about getting this done or more to the point any video's/soundclips of what it sounded like (unless Im missing something), it was total stab in the dark but as its a fully reversible procedure I went for it, nervous to be honest as I really didn't want some hideously loud Saxo cherry bomb style thing on the back. It was between this or an AFE induction kit, at around £400, not worth it in my opinion.

Anyway, kept the tips pretty much as stock looking as possible, took about two hours. First impressions......

On start-up and idle, not much different at all, makes little difference. Pottering around at low revs/round town sort of driving again little difference. It's there don't get me wrong, there is a difference, but probably not what you would expect, subtle really. It does burble and pop like a mentalist though, seriously its always at it in any gear on de-acceleration, love or hate it, does sound kind of cool! Are these engines set up purposely to over-fuel a bit to protect the engine?
Giving it the beans, sounds really sweet, not a massive change in the note or a huge in your face noise, but just makes what was already there louder so plus points there in my book. On over-run you get some massive pops and bangs occasionally, see video for example!

Negative points.....it's boomy sitting at around 2.7k rpm to around 3k rpm, which as you guessed it is around motorway cruising speed. Not going to lie here, its not my cup of tea in that department, its not horrendous and turn the radio up a bit and you kind of forget about it....but it is there...and I would imagine on a long journey, it would get on your tits. Its a risk I took being a second car and using it mostly for 'fun' trips and general summer time cruising about. If it was my daily drive though, I would have swapped it back already to be honest. As it stands, I'll probably keep it as is for summer but most likely change it back to stock soon after.

Summary: Cost me £200, completely reversible and is great fun now and again to really get the engine singing when your giving it the beans. As a daily driver, I wouldn't go there personally but then I'm no boy racer anymore  so you may want to consider other options, although probably more costly!

Video is pretty lame but you get the idea, few drive-by's and standard behind car rev-fest! ****Does anyone know what that kind of fart sound is when the revs are coming down on the behind car shot? Haven't noticed it from inside the car before, might be a trip back to the exhaust place here!****

I'll try get some better video/sound tomorrow, in-car is difficult due to other noise/rubbish Iphone mic!

I think it sounds great! like a classic 6 cylinder sports car.

I would love to do that on my coupe, though the GF has instantly sad no, additionally as its a daily I guess the drone would be annoying as I sit on the A50.... Shame.

As your toy it sounds like a lot of fun. Those pop are so loud  does it feel like you've lost anything due to loss of back pressure at all? Revving on the spot gives the same characteristics as standard just louder, same kind of cackle on over run.

Oooooo, I quite like that actually

Lary but not in your face. Couldn't do it if it drones on the motorway though as mine is a daily :(

Does doing this affect performance, as asked above ?

Sounds great and exactly same setup as mine apart from the quad conversion. Mine does drone on the motorway as well but it's something I have got used to and it's a lot better with the window open a jar lol.... :D

love the pops n bangs... all cars should have that as standard...

always loved my little Abarth going off its nut with them.... :D

so is there no decent system for the Z4 around????

:thumb:

As far as performance goes, it doesn't feel any less torquey when going for it, I guess it's possible that it might have lost a few tenths in the 0-60 dash but certainly nothing you would really notice in the real world.

I might be overplaying the drone, it's really not that bad and I doubt any worse than most other aftermarket systems. It doesn't 'get in your head' that much but I guess if I was using it everyday it may well become annoying. One persons annoying and 'over the top' might not be the same for the next person. I guess the real test will be when the other half joins me for a long journey and if it gives her a headache or not!

There's some great aftermarket systems from what I've seen and heard but I think like many others do I really want to spend £600+ just for a bit more sound which could turn out to be something I didn't like? Not really. At least at this price point of £200 I can put it back to standard easily with just a few bolts swapping over. Just thought this might help some guys who may be thinking of doing something similar for some more noise :)

21 secs in  does sound nice!
...now you've got yours fitted & have a template as such, why don't you bang a few out in the 'for sale area'......pretty please!! :D

Yeah that massive pop was a bit unexpected! 8)

Would love to sell some myself, I had it done by Style Dynamics in Hayes nr. London though. Nice guys, know they're stuff so can recommend them. I imagine most competent exhaust centres could knock one up for a similar price, fairly straight forward operation I believe. Just make sure you get flanges put on the standard back box if you want to go back to standard!

He had sent me the video before but the link is dead :(
It sounds fantastic and I wanted to hear it again as I'm about to book mine in

Could this not be knocked up for cheaper than 200 quid? Couple bits of ss pipe and access to a welder seems to be all you need.

Yeah I should thinkso. I had an estimate from power flow last year of about £160

I'll either buy two more MM tip but bigger or get it so mine can be slipped on like standard

Thats not bad tbh. Not keen on having a boy racer zorst, but want some pops and a better exterior sound.

Yeah it annoys me that I can hear the pops and bangs happening in my exhaust but it's like they are wrapped in a blanket!
It's a sports car and it needs to sound like it.
