3.0 Exhaust mod. Finally a good sound. Clip added

Got my exhaust all sorted this week. It's taken some time as I couldn't get the sound I wanted..!!

First.... I removed one side of the insulation....................................... Result.......Still sounded the same. More drone :(
Second.... I removed the second side of insulation.............................. Result.......Still sounded the same. Bit more drone :(
Third.... I went to the pub with mates............................................... Result....... I got pretty drunk and had a laugh :D
Forth I cut all the chambers out and joined the incoming and out going pips with perforated pipe, then wrapped in insulation. Result sounded like the exhaust before I started playing with it :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:


Fifth...Joined the incoming and outgoing tubes with steel tube. Left a very small section of perforated tube ( 15mm wide section ) then wrapped that in steel wool and then surrounded it all with the insulation.

It sounds awesome, I absolutely love it :D :D :D :D :D :D

Starting the car it sounds pretty normal and doesn't draw attention from people thinking your a nob head. Once you set of and give it some revs it comes into it's own and sounds great. A good meaty roar. BMW should of made it sound like this from the offset.

I've even put the foam back into the sound generator as it's not needed any more.... :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
 
Must admit, I'm not keen on the sound mine makes. Removing the foam made is a bit better but I do feel that the exhaust note on the standard car is a bit 'meh'.
 
It sounds great if you're stood behind pushing the car whilst the girlfriend revs the absolute s**t out of it :lol:

Tiny bit on the motorway with the radio off. I'd really recommend doing the mod, can't stop driving the car at the moment :driving:
 
Did you ever take a video of this mate? Gonna take mine apart again next week, add another bypass pipe and poss join the internal pipes as you have done, thinking about it, that's definitely what I'm gonna do! Interested in the sound yours has though :thumbsup:

Just done a couple clips. For some reason the sound quality is crap on my iphone. Tried to get a sound clip driving but all it picked up was wind noise :(

It sounds a hundred times better in person and under load. Thing I like the most is when your driving in built up areas with low revs the cars nice and quite. Give it some beans and you turn heads :evil:
 
I'm going to be building a quad system..

what do you reckon I could do - perhaps lead one pipe out the side and split into two for the right hand ports, then on the remaining pipe, split that into two and use the existing exit ports?

Also - where'd you get the perforated pipe from? assume it wasn't that expensive? :)

You don't need perforated pipe as it's already there :D

Basically I chopped all the insides out. Where the two pipes enter the exhaust I cut them off about 2cm after the perforated section. I then chopped the outgoing pipes off leaving about 3cm. I then joined the pipes up with flexi 60mm exhaust tube. I had to make two spacer's for the exiting pipes as they are 50mm diameter.

It would be a lot better job if you could weld the joining pipes in place. I used a shed load of exhaust putty lol

With the perforated section that's still exposed you need to first wrap that in wire wool. I used the stuff that's already in the exhaust. After that stuff all the fluffy insulation back in.
If you didn't use the wire wool and the insulation your end up with loads of Drone from the exhaust.

As for the quad exhaust I'd think you'd be better off splitting the pipes before it enters the first backbox. That way your guaranteed even pressure in both systems.

I have done a DIY quad Mr sk happy to help you out also. Used one of your right ups on fixing stuff when I first joined. Happy to help anyway as pay back buddy :thumbsup:

Have you got welding and metal working facility's? Happy for you to pop to mine some time if not?
 
Yorkie do you have any of the sound dreading stuff left over? I am making some DIY back boxes for my new quad any left over would help a dude out :thumbsup:

Nah mate I stuffed it all back inside.

Have a look on eBay for someone selling a backbox for any old car locally. Your probably get it for a fiver and just rip the insides out :thumbsup:
