23i Fuel Consumption / Mileage

Obviously i'm earning a lot more:

:D :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

OOHH Jeez!!!
What did I just do or say!

I need to fix this problem like quick right!

All meetings are done by 2pm Tomorrow/Friday.

I MUST swap over ecu's & re-flash.

Hi, that’s not going to give an accurate comparison as the gauge isn’t linear-mine doesn’t move at all until 70 or 80miles have passed.
Best way is full tank till near empty, then brim it again & note the fuel used, there’s no ambiguity then
200 miles on a tank sounds pretty bad, i used to get 400 easily from my old 3.0si. Don’t think it ever went below 300? :?
Rob

Thanks for the reply Rob,

I understand it's not the best way to gauge / estimate consumption. Not interested in anything too scientific.
Also can't ask others to do a brim to brim estimate as they may not be doing the mileage.

With mine it's quite consistant from any quarter tank to any quarter tank. The dashboard estimate is also around 214 miles for a full tank.
I can literally see my wallet draining.

Every so often, when driving, i go "OUCH".
Wifey asks "What's the matter?"
I reply: "Just felt another hit to my wallet in my backside pocket"

I suspect it is to do with that replacement ECU.
I am going to get the old ECU reflashed - probably this weekend
... IF it's warm and IF i can bother to get my ar*se out of bed early enough and IF there's no rugby or football on to distract me.
:D :D :D

I have been doing exactly what Rob has said since I purchased my 23i 18 months ago - just under 35mpg and at the las fill up, car showed 360miles to empty

Yes I am a sad

Me likey!

First time I have done it and mine is mostly motorway / decent A-roads so get good mpg but just look at how fuel has shifted in the last few month - bloody frightening if only getting 200 miles from a tank, mine quite regularly shows over 400 on a motorway

If I did that I’d never drive mine

Not enough cells in Excel for you buddy and being in finance, I am sure if you did that and saw the fuel you are burins through, you would be buying a diesel astra

Creating and looking at spreadsheets daily is the reason I don’t have one of those  oh and on another note sort out that bloody formatting, those figures after the decimal points are giving me the fear :poke:

On a more serious note in the M40i I used eco pro on my trip back from Wales for the first time and it said I was getting 86.1 miles more from half a tank using that mode compared to my normal consumption :D

Nothing wrong with my formatting, I am an engineer so need at least 10 decimal lace to know it close enough.

86.1mpg but half the fun if fun s possible on motorways

In finance pounds and pence, you can keep your other 8 decimal places

Exactly, no fun on motorways so decided to try that unknown mode. One bonus is that it brings down the projected fuel costs on the Pyrenees trip  the gentler sections where we’re just cruising to/from Chunnel and ferries will now see it used

Well we all know engineers can do great things with cars but its the shillings pounds n pence men that stop all that great design being launched, more than a groat and you lot stop the fun.

Makes sense when cruising to use the eco mode - no point being in sport plus at 70 on the motorway

I recently drove (28i) 544 way and return on a total of 46.61 + 50.19 + 43.5. Combining motorway cruising 160-170 and some mountain road driving in sport mode with paddle shift. That makes 12.9l/100km or 18 mpg. It is what it is I guess, to me it seems high for a 4 cylinder engine.

I think your signature might hold a clue for those numbers

i've gotta ask, whats your normal usage pattern?

if you only ever drive 5 miles at a time, and you drive those 5 miles enthusiastically, 200 miles to a tank doesn't seem too bad. if you're cruising along a motorway however, then i'd expect a fair bit better.

Unfortunately I live in a city and I don't use the car every day, when I do is for short commutes in the city. Weekends and work or holiday long trips might be 30% of car usage. I noticed when I use a tank driving mainly in city I can do 420-450 Km. The range extends to 530-550, 550 being the absolute max in motorway at 150kph avg.

BTW: any tips on radar detector

I thought those were illegal in Spain, I have a subscription to Coyote which works in Spain and most of Europe and works great on Apple CarPlay via my MMI box

They might well be...

Returning to fuel ...

1 I never drive slowly just to save petrol
2 I never drive fast just to waste it
3 I don't know the price of petrol*
4 I don't know the mileage to the first bong at 50 miles or the second at 30 (only that BMW were stupid to use the same warning for petrol and for major mechanical faults)
5 I enjoy my Z4 very much
6 The global figure on the dash is 26.4.

*What difference would it make if I did? I can't change it and shouting at the person behind the counter when it goes up would be stupid - he or she can't change it, either.

Getting back to this. I managed to recover my original ECU by a series of software reflashes and updates to the latest versions.
It feels like a different beast now. I forgot what i was missing.

It's possible the injectors weren't functioning properly/coded properly on the replacement ECU hence the lethargic feel and high fuel consumption.
I have a 60KM each way drive tomorrow so will have a better idea of the change in fuel consumption. Will report back.

Went on that drive today. Car is averaging 26.8MPG.
Filled up the tank and its showing 460 miles to empty.
Happy days are here again just in time for the sunshine!!

Thanks for all the replies!

I wonder if there’s something amiss with my 23i which returns 30mpg or thereabouts on my 15 mile each way commute of mixed driving - a full tank shows a range of about 330 miles.
The car is also a bit ‘woolly’ on the throttle, except in Sport mode which sharpens things up nicely.

That’s not far off the mark for mixed driving over a shortish journey, don’t forget it’s still warming up for the first 5miles or so.
