2015/2016 35i(s) Engine issues

Curious who has had issues with these engines. I am curious if we owners of these years have seen less issues because of BMW fixing early problems, or if we think we just are seeing less because they are newer?

Why do you think 35i Z4 owners have less issues than other N54 BMWs?

Seems pretty clear?

Well I don’t, i was partly assuming though that as they used the engine in successive years they made some minor reliability improvements. Maybe I’m wrong but in my profession we definitely do. Was wondering if that was the experience or not.

It’s not an usual expectation to expect mid life improvements..the rate of change driven by emission regulations means that most engines did not enjoy that long a run, so, in reality , most operational feedback was folded into the next major engine version..

Some running changes were made were they could be made without major revision so on the N54 they went through many (13) iterations of injectors ..but in reality it was mostly the parts that were common across several engines / models that were revised over time with operational experience..eg water pumps...

So in summary by the time the issues became apparent they were already designing the follow on engine , so unless a desperate issue within the warranty period BMW just hoped the car was sold before they had to cope with it..call me cynical..

HPFP was also improved after initial version due to poor engineering on some items.

Do you think we should we expect those to fail less on last years of the E89 production?

Just wondering if I should still be expecting that to go around 60000 miles.

There is all kinds of issues with the N54.

HPFP are common as are injectors.

Turbo's rattle and leak oil

Cam covers break

Vanos solenoids

Cam ledge bearings wear

I have heard of a headgasket failure, and a cam chain tensioner fail, although never experienced it myself.

You can find a lot of people on YouTube etc who dedicate themselves to the N54 in all its guises. From standard to well over 600BHP. Track a few down and ask them I have always found them very keen to chat.

When I was looking for a Z4 my choice was either 30i or 35i / 35is. I did some research on the reliability of the N54 by speaking to some specialists, internet you tube etc and the general consensus was that the N54 of any year cannot be considered reliable maybe some components were updated but on the whole not much difference. If you really want a N54 just have a couple of grand spare in the bank at any point in time in case anything goes wrong that way you won't worry about it and can enjoy the car. But if you really are worried about it and don't want to be lumbered with expensive repair bills then it would be better to stick to the NA N52 or the 4 pot N20.

Good advice! How much do you think an N20 owner will want to take an N54 in part exchange?
