Sounds quite over-stretched. Porsche's 911 Turbo is managing only around 500bhp with a 3.8 litre and VNT turbos. M car my arse!

It's probably true to some extent, the next M5 will also have a turbo engine, and that's the way most manufacturers are going, it's the only way to get the grunt with low CO2.

Usual Autoexpress story from nothing and crap cobbled together image from inside their own heads IMO. The only factual bit is the turbo engine and BMW have dropped enough hints about that previously.

Don't forget thought that the actual engine in the E89 is bulletproof. It's the bits bolted to it that have had teething problems. Mine seems well sorted now 18,000 miles in! When that 6 comes out in the M3, it should be well sorted by then!

I do think that a new Z4M is looking unlikely, but if it does come out it may still have the V8 in it! They used the 1st gen Z4M as a dumping ground for an engine they were phasing out. :wink:

Well, it's not.

It's just the cheaper way.

Lamborghini and Ferrari have managed to lighten their cars and use ever faster spinning big NA motors, that are also greener than ever.

BMW are, imho, being very lazy.

Bulletproof status should really cover most of the engine though. Any engine is as good as bulletproof if you talk just about the block...

Also, I'd give it some more years. They are still generally fairly modern low mileage engines. 6yrs/100k miles+ will be when we can start to see if they are really solid or not (in my view)


But by all accounts it is a nice solid BMW engine, but how good it'll be with 450bhp! BMW already revised the cooling kit for it for an extra 30bhp, so for the extra 150bhp over the design power? It might be a bit more delicate?!

Some tuners (Schnitzer?) have got 370 bhp for this engine, but 450bhp with a 3 year warranty seems a big leap. But if you look at Evo or Scooby those engines are produced with big variances in BHP.

They write such sh*t in that magazine, the next gen M3 isn't due out till 2014 if you follow the cycles.

Don't forget that back in the late 80's there was a 2.9 litre twin turbo that happened to have 478BHP.

It was in car called the Ferrari F40. Don't recall anyone questioning that car's pedigree......
