2012 520D Efficient Dynamics

Picking this back up... the trade in figures are interesting and it clearly shows how depreciation slows...

Around a year ago when the 20i offer was on, I looked into the deal to see if it was worth swapping the 35i into a 20i. At the time the 20i deal was of course very appealing (bar the drop in power and loss of toys), but the trade in figure was diabolical for my car.

So here we are present day, and I've been offered exactly the same figure trade in as I was a year go, while looking at this 520D ED. Clearly they weren't making much on the 20i's hence a crap trade in value. I'm not so happy about the current figure but its in line with what you'd expect from a dealer. I'll avoid the figures on here, but thought it curious at least.

I'm still pondering on this car... its sensible only, there's not much emotion to it like there is the Z4 ownership.

I had a dream last night about it, clearly I'm thinking about this way too much. I had collected an F11 520D tourer. I discovered, once paid and signed for, that the rear seats didn't collapse in this model and in fact they were fixed with some sort of luggage straps attached as a 'feature'. In my dream I rolled my eyes and wondered what I had done, heart sinking, looking back across the car park at my lovely black, gleaming e89 which now belonged to the dealer.

A sign?

It's a really tough decision for you but I do think the 520d has sown a seed for you somewhere as its clearly on your mind.

If you think the financial benefits can outweigh the fun you have in your Zed then its the way forward if not then I would probably stick with what you have, I am pleased you bumped this back up as I was wondering what your plans were with it :)

Definitely a nice looking motor, I did wonder what would happen to all the Olympic cars, as there seems to be loads.

I'd love one, but only as a more sensible option whilst keeping the Z, so unfortunately not for me at this time...

My jaw still drops at the e89... its a lovely looking car, I've spent a few quid on it but I've no idea why this 520d has stuck in my mind, they're nowhere near as nice to look at, albeit the interiors are nice. Its not like it would even save me money as it would cost me more to buy as its a 2012 (newer and still to depreciate). I think the main draw is perhaps I can see myself in it for the comfort and practicality and there's a glimmer of hope that the ownership experience might be better (as the model has been around a few years, fewer faults to deal with, something in my mind given I bought one of the first e89's). I know full well though that I'll not be passionate about it as I am with the e89.

My other half jokes almost nightly that cars are like porn to me, I just can't stop. ..anyhow, the local dealer has an iS in stock and the 520D, I'm going tonight to see them, hopefully line up a test drive in both. The iS has massive spec, ex BMW (possibly ragged) car, but is (sorry Carol) Atacama which is as far from the black I'm used to as you can get.

I'm going to have to see the GP about all this... Its all cars cars cars!

Nothing wrong with your obsession Maniac! I have the same symptoms  the iS sounds nice but I agree if you can take them both out then you can have a nice informed opinion on what to do, good luck  & keep us all updated :)

my courtesy car is a 520d m sport....

its immense...slight lack of power but from 0-30mph it feels quicker than the ///m cos u just whap ur foor down and the auto does all the work...
sport plus is a good mode
brill car, but a little boring
id have a 535d though

Yes. As the 35i is now 3.5 yrs old, its lost most of its money and it would be cheaper to keep that and pay it off. The 520d is cheaper to run certainly, but when you factor in the depreciation given its only 8 months old, that will lose me more money in depreciation, even tho its a frugal/arguably more mass desirable car. Plus its going to cost me £4K to change. It doesn't make huge sense financially... nor emotionally...

I think the essence of this is that I want to get rid of that 'what is going to break next' feeling and the 520D is the only thing I've liked in quite some time. When in fact, I've solved all there is likely to solve on the 35i (touch wood), 10 mths warranty is still in place, and equally, there's no guarantee that the 520D is going to be flawless.

Indeed..

I have heard quite a few problems with the F10 already...

The thing is,if your changing your car every 3 years or so arent you losing heck of a lot of money over its term? Doesnt the cost of fuel/insurance/tax become a moot point ?

Well I've been to see the exact car today and I've gone off the idea.

I fell in love with the 520d M sport they had in stock with similar spec and interior etc but having now seen the ED it looks like an old mans car :(. So I'm holding out for the right spec M sport tourer or until the new 4 series arrives...

agreed, as with all bmw's nowdays....its only the ///m or m sport models tht really do it for me

Different for me with the e89.. I prefer the look of the non M sport on mine.

If mine was m sport I would lose the elegant look and fab silver steering wheel etc.

M sport e89s look better in other than black but I love my non M sport in black.

The f10 however looks old in non M sport trim.

Always has to be MSport. If you are financing they also make more sense as they always have a higher GFV.

I've just bought one of these ex-Olympic 520D's and absolutely love it! It's comfortable, refined, full of toys and easily fast enough for me on my 70 mile a day mostly motorway commute.

The price was a steal, and with £30 road tax, cheaper insurance and around 58mpg already I'm well happy.

I traded my 4 year old 123D M Sport for it which was remapped, and I'm not missing it at all. It really depends upon what you want it for and how you drive.

We still have the Z4 as that is my wife's, and I have the TVR for real weekend fun !

My dad was going to go for one of these or the Olympic 3 Series, but they weren't quite the right spec.

In the end he picked up a 6 month old ex business manager's 3 Series at one of the BMW dealers at a really good price with all the options/spec he wanted.
