2006 Z4M Roadster minor refurb thread

Thoroughly enjoyed that and taken some inspiration on the chassis clean up

Also worth checking the vanos unit, especially the exhaust hub tabs as they're a know weak point in the s54. Happy to help in you need any advise.

Cool. Any simple way to test VANOS? I don't know much about it yet.

Exhaust is off now. Wow! What a heavy exhaust this car has. I think some sections need replacing.

You can test the functionality of the vanos seals using ISTA but that only tells you one part of the story. The more important check is of the exhaust hub driver tabs, which can only be done with the valve cover off. There's plenty of videos on YT, this one is a good guide:

If you are thinking of tackling the vanos unit, pm me as I have done many over the years and have all the original timing tools, a refurbished vanos unit on the shelf and BMW parts you'll need.

Brill thanks, will contact you when I approach this :)

Great effort on the diff

Just a note on torque settings, the driveshaft bolts are 100nm on our cars as its the steel torx bolts not the silver torx bolts found on the very earliest E46 m3.

I knew posting these vids would be useful! Thanks a lot.

OK so my prop bolts are 10NM too tight, I guess that's OK. I'll increase the driveshaft bolts to 100NM.

My driveshaft bolts are actually a dark green, I guess that's what BMW call black?

It's weird that we have to get our info from M3 diagrams, I wonder why there isn't Z4M info out there? I checked RealOEM for Z4M but nothing useful.

Fortunately for us, the rear axle is almost identical to the E46 m3 with two exceptions, first being the differential heat sink and secondly the radius arm which uses a different bracket to secure the rear brake flexible hose.

I'm currently trying to modify an E46 m3 radius arm to secure the rear flexible hose bracket:

Will report back when I've figured it out.

Fair play, you just get stuck in and make it happen 👏👏. Btw going from minor refurb and replacing your exhaust to incoming baby, you don’t do things by half! Good luck with baby 👍

Be careful using the E46 torque settings from the realoem diagram, I am sure most are the same, but having finally got TIS working, I noticed a difference on the rear caliper slide pin torque on TIS to what is shown on the exploded realoem pictures.

Thanks, what's TIS by the way?

Aircon - suggest you keep it as it's great for demisting windscreens when it's wet

I will put it back in as soon as I can be bothered, but TBH this car is never going to be driven in rain, or at least not on purpose. I'm too precious about it :)
