£20-£23k - What weekend car?

There's a thread running at present the consensus of which concludes the E89 to be better looking with better handling and better acceleration than the ///M, so I suppose it's time we all swapped over now they're getting cheap

bwahaha - this one's easy...

With a turbo, and 7 years+ of design/development time, i'd hope it goes faster + looks nicer.

Sadly, it's just turbos, and is nowhere near as awesome as the m-coupe is to it's competitors in it's respective release period. z4mc was a class leader in its time, whereas the e89 sits in the middle of the pack nicely. Those claiming the E89 handles anywhere near the z4mc (or even better) just haven't driven an M car. E89 drives like a wallowy motorway boat in comparison, and i can't say i'd even consider buying one at a large discount nevermind consider it worth more as an 'upgrade'.

Haven't seen the thread, mind you. The only time a 35is might (is) faster, is in a straight line, when jb4'd, and you'd hope so with +70hp and a tonne more torque.

EDIT: <some sort of no-offence opinions based blah blah disclaimer here.. E89 is a great car, and a much better tourer if you don't have any belongings, but it's not an M coupe in any world>

For looks, I don't think the E89 gets anywhere near the E85 / 86. Never driven one so can't comment, but I can't see myself ever being tempted by an E89, I'd go the Boxster route.

S5 Convertible for me. 4 seats so I can take friends out and the dog can come too. Not silly fuel economy and a nice, well specced cruiser.
B&O stereo, HDD nav, etc.
Think this may be the way to go next year as I just don't use my car at the weekends really and it's a waste.

Im not a major fast car geek or know a lot about what is quicker than anything else and also dont own a 35is (just a 23i for us) but for me a car is about comfort and how it looks. I have the bike for performance.
I dont get however the comments on the boot size.
I think the boot size is great and even with the top down can hold a fair bit. Granted you have to raise the roof to get access to the most of it.
I dont know how it compares to the size of the E85s boot but I wouldnt think there was much in it.
In fact figures on the net seem to say the E89s boot is larger than both the E85 and E86 but obviously smaller with the roof down.
If you want to look at small boots then our Minis is tiny, just as well the rear seats fold flat and our old MR2 was probably smaller than the Minis.

I think the main problem with the E89 boot is the opening with the roof down, it's pretty much useless. I couldn't get a rucksack through the gap. On the other hand.. my z4mc will take golf clubs (most critical), ikea flatpack furniture, many many weekend bags (the other half can attest to that.. to my dismay).

For E89s with comfort access or the smarttop fitted there is a clever little way to lift the roof out the boot, it then pops the boot so you can put in whatever you are looking to do and when you close it, the roof goes back into the boot. I believe you can get golf clubs in the boot but if you want the roof down you'd probably need to pop the heads thought the 'thru load' from the boot into the front.

I get quite a bit in my E89. With the roof up or down, going camping next week and I will get everything in and the roof down. Large 4 man pop up tent, cool box, BBQ, clothes, food, drink, chairs and sleeping bags and inflatable mats

Cool! sounds better than i experienced in my (albeit short..) tests... I drove two, tried to put my rucksack in one and laughed.

I managed a tent, all the gubbins for camping trip, clothes, food etc in mine, i'm confident it wouldn't be possible in the roady version.

The coupe is a sporty hatchback right enough

To be honest about 2 years before I got the E89 although I loved them at launch I started to go off them and was 100% against getting one when I opened the boot in the showroom, saw the boot and thought wtf is that?? There is no room. Completely forgot that when I got mines and then realised it was actually much better than when I first saw it.
