2.5Si or 3.0Si

Annual oil change at least and every other year brake fluid. At worst case, every other year oil and brake fluid change. Then the inspection services of course with spark plugs etc.

Obviously, since the last service is two years ago, you at least look at a service (no idea how big it is as can't see what has been done) and always a brake fluid one.

This is the previous owners post. 📸 Look at this post on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/share/xEK3vkgAT5YZp1pj/?mibextid=K35XfP

Since the new owner he’s done all the brakes and front wheel bearings and water pump and service.

Found the car you mentioned, wouldn't worry too much about the dash lights as that can be as cheap as £20 if it is the ABS sensor, or possibly more if ABS pump or yaw sensor. Without code reader cannot know for sure.

The price is very cheap at that though.

So this is the one I’m interested in. It’s on 85k and is priced at £7k. Let me know your thought on price please? It’s hard to gauge as they vary so much on sites.

That’s the same combo as [ref]earthdweller[/ref], those seats are both a rare and expensive option. They go very well together in the flesh

I agree with others, the service history is a bit far apart unless there’s been oil changes that aren’t documented there. Good luck with the search :)

I would take your time buying, you got money, the market is off season, people will want to sell. A good bargain can be had if you wait and get exactly the one you are looking for. I waited a good 2-3 months before getting the one I wanted - I did look at a few (inkey can testify as he was on the purchase journey with me!) but his advice was golden, only buy the one you REALLY want.

As the previous owner of a lower powered but sweet running n52 2.5i and now a 3.0si coupe, I would say buy on condition.
Condition at this age is the most important factor, MOT history will show if a cars been looked after, service history to a slightly lesser degree.
There are some horrendously neglected Z4s out there, despite this all the adverts you see will seem the same - a photo can hide many sins.
I also wouldn’t pay through the nose for an ultra low mileage example. You are more likely to get a 2.5si bargain than a 3.0si one.
Good luck with your search

That looks tidy, not sure about the blue seats against the silver, but that's just down to personal taste. Only one point of real concern, what size wheel and tyre is fitted to the front, they should be 225/40 R18 not 255/35 R18. Depending on offset there could be a some rubbing

But to me they look like black seats :scratchhead:
Must be another of those optical illusions I keep reading about when I'm "doom scrolling" on my "mobe"

It is a rather dark blue though, I’m not a fan of blue seats but the ones fitted to the Z3 are, dare I say it, quite nice

Why thank you kind Sir

I personally love the Syrah blue not just because of the colour but also the quality of the leather compared to the standard and I think it lifts the cabin over boring black without being blingy

IIRC there were only 12 sold in the uk with it

Yes it looks great in a Silver car, and as you say the Nappa leather is much better quality than the standard Oregon leather.

In defence of the 2.5si, the fuel economy should be better than the 3.0si I would imagine - I get 38 mpg from mine mostly on a daily commute.
Also, the power is pretty much the same as the non si 3.0L engine. So in a sense it's got the best of both worlds, and maybe lower insurance cover costs as well?

I've seen this mentioned a lot and whilst it's true that the power difference of 231bhp for the 3.0i and 218bhp for the 2.5Si is similar, there is also a much larger difference in torque which is arguably more important. The 3.0i has 300Nm compared to the 2.5Si with 250Nm

I had an E86 3.0si with 60k miles on it and then bought an E85 3.0si with 115k miles on it and to be honest you are hard pressed to notice the difference in terms of engine delivery. There is a real obsession over mileage, these engines are good for 150k+ miles if well maintained. I would personally go the higher mile 3.0si and enjoy the full capability of the N52.

I'd argue that the Engine and Gearbox, etc will outlast the rest of the car with normal servicing. For instance, I don't see the engine and gearbox not reaching 300k miles with basic servicing in most cases. The issues are going to be rust, ball joints, bushes, dampers, etc. Obviously, these can all be replaced, but at some point, it becomes uneconomic to most people.

That being said, unless the car has been garaged whilst off the road, I see no advantage in paying the extra money for a low-mileage car over an average/high mile example. In fact, in most cases, I'd rather take a higher mileage car that's had maintenance works replacing the above mentioned moveable parts over the last few years, it'll drive better and cost less over your ownership.

I can see the following advantages of a low miler:

Engine if maintained properly will be in better condition (albeit marginally on an N52) than an equally well maintained high miler
Selling the car usually requires less effort, low milers attract less questions generally than high milers where people negotiate quite hard
Low milers as we have ascertained hold their value better, once you tip over that 100k mark though the mythical engine bomb starts ticking lol

All that said, the benefits of my higher miler is that all the big maintenance work has been done which could leave the low mile owner hugely out of pocket if its not been. I also have a lot of change left in my pocket for what is in effect the same car.

Of course this isnt a generic rule, looking at certain engines on the market there are well known ones which are pretty much ready to explode well before their 100k birthday. Just so happens the N52 is a fantastically well built thing.
