2.5 N52 oil consumption

What's an approximate amount of oil loss per 1000 miles?

Am about 1700 miles into ownership and the light is just about ready to announce another litre is required. Would prefer it didn't want feeding, but internet says they do burn some oil normally

Hmmm. 🤔
You sure it is not a minor leak?
My 3.0 N52 has not shown any sign of using oil in the last 3k miles since it was replaced.
Check around the plugs, the cam cover then underneath, especially around the rear of the engine.

My first 3.0Si didn't use any, but I bought it on 54K and sold it on 62K.

My next 3.0Si needed 1.75 litres of top-ups from 82K to 89K.

My 325i used a litre and a half between 132K and 139K.

After having the oil filter housing gasket replaced my current 330i has used 0.75 litre in the last 2K miles (it's on 130K now).

As they get older they do seem to get through a bit, but a litre in 1,700 miles suggests you may have an oil leak somewhere. Have a good look around the top of the engine for any signs of leakage from the cam-cover and oil filter housing.

My 2007 2.5si has settled down to 1L of oil about every 1200 miles.
The oil level sensor has become noticeably more erratic over the last few years so it might be worth keeping a note of your top up stats so you don't end up over filling your engine with oil.
I recently bought a new sensor (genuine BMW) and I'll get it fitted next oil change.
The Valvetronic motor seal does leak and needs to be replaced as does the Valvetronic motor.
When I bought the car in 2016 it had 32k miles on it and the "add 1L oil" message only came up every 3 - 4 thousand miles.
It has now done over 142k miles.
I use Millers XF Premium C3 5W40 oil.

Mine drinks a litre every 2000 miles (almost exactly.) Alusil engines will consume some oil by their nature (see also M54) and BMW state anything down to 1 litre per 1000 miles is within spec.

I know it's both now. It's burning oil because I cleaned the chrome exhaust ends when I first got it and they're black again. Just had a poke around and there's quite a puddle beneath the valvetronic unit. Also evidence of oil leaking from the oil fill area.

Couldn't see anything around the oil filter and cannot (yet) get underneath to check the sump.

I've order the valvetronic and oil filler gaskets. Hopefully they'll arrive fairly soon.

Just one thing, how do you reset the valvetronic motor?

There's a sequence involving the accelerator pedal - I forget, easy to search up. But, more importantly, make sure you've watched how to remove the Valvetronic motor to make sure it fits back properly and to avoid breaking it on the way out. The last M539 Restorations video covered it really nicely (38min 45sec in):

NewTIS makes no mention of any recalibration etc, and I've only ever done what these instructions say.
Before you put the top cover back on, switch the ignition on and you will hear the motor do a quick movement to settle itself.
