1st to 2nd gear notchy

I have 2007 z4 3.0si coupe. Shifting from 1st into 2nd feels pretty notchy, no grinding at all, just not very smooth. All other gears are smooth as butta... I've been driving manuals for over 30 years, so it's not the driver. It doesn't matter how long the clutch has been engaged, it's still not smooth going into 2nd gear. Is this normal or do I have a problem? The car has less than 1k miles on it, so maybe it still needs some break-in, I'm still being very gentle on it till I break it in properly.

Definitely needs more miles. Mine is just now starting to feel nice and smooth after 9K miles. The factory does almost nothing to the gearbox to give it any kind of break in before they send it out the door given what we saw on the Ultimate Factory tour this evening.

I've got 22K on mine, and it's still a little notchy. After driving my boss's souped up Mustang though, it feels like silk! Give it more time hon

Did you also have 2nd gear shift rougher than all the other gears?

My guess is that 2nd gear synrco is beefed up and this is the cause (I hope). 2nd gear takes the most abuse in a gear box. Other cars I've had used a much different synco for 2nd gear than the other gears. One of me cars uses like a double syncro. All the other gears feel way smoother than 2nd. Now I need to do some research to see if the 2nd gear syncro is unique to the rest of the gears, which would cause it to feel different.

pungo, I would be very interested in your findings. My 2nd is the roughest gear too.
I did found this thread over at bimmerforums, they are discussing 2nd gear grind, which mine doesn't do, but I'm still breaking it in and haven't tried high RPM shifts into 2nd yet. I still haven't found any detailed mechanical info on the 2nd gear syncro, I would really like to see a trans apart.

I had my gearbox replaced on 2005 3.0 - I can't find my original post now, but I had exactly the same problem as you, and they replaced it no problem. The new 'box was much better.

Mine's notchy too. When I slam shift, sometimes I miss third and grind 'em. I've learned to be more gentle. I'm pretty sure I remember the dealer saying mine had a new clutch when I got her with 40,000 miles. She has 55,000 now and it's much better. I can be really smooth through the gears with her, but it takes some finesse.

FNI hit the nail on the head, give it time. If it's really bad, I would have the dealer check it out under warranty.

[edit] I find it most notchy if I shift between 3000 and 4500 rpms. So I usually run first up to 4500 or 5000 - it's more fun that way anyway :driving: Just make sure to leave plenty of room between you and the car in front of you if in traffic before doing that cause you'll be doing 45mph before you know it and end up slamming on your brakes for the guy ahead of you who's accellerating at 3-5mph/sec where you will be closer to accellerating at 9-10mph/sec. The other technique that I do is to shift around 2500 rpm's. This one is tricky, but with some practice you can get the gas/clutch mixture down pat and it'll be as smooth as a baby's bottom.

The dealer demo I had back in December last year grinded a couple of times when shifting fast from 1st to 2nd.. (very embarressing in the traffic-light GP, you know :D).

I've had it happen a couple of times in my MC as well, but as it's only happened a very small number of times, I've presumed each time, that it must be something I'm doing....

1st to 2nd is notchy when cold, but soon smooths out once the car is up to temperature.

Hi folks,
Does anyone have any gear or clutch or engine noise at low speed? Is this normal? I`m not sure where it`s coming from but it`s a mechanical noise that can be heard even with the radio on. I`ve only had my car a few days and so far I have only noticed it in first gear when driving very slowly.

My M some times sounds like the whole transmission is gonna fall out the car when you shift gears. Sometime 2-3 but mostly 1-2.

I brought it in twice but of course it doesn't happen when they have it.

Is the problem worse when the gearbox is cold? I've never come across this problem before in a Z but from previous experience with other cars you can often reduce or illiminate the problem by using a thinner oil.

The noise in mine is the same when hot, ie after a 40mile motorway cruise. I notice the noise when drivign very slowly. The car is still new to me so I will observe the noise more as I get used to the car. The box is a bit notchy also as per the comments above but it only has 2500 miles on it at the moment although this will be rising fast as I use the car daily.

if anyone is in Plymouth or near West Berkshire (when I`m in that area) and fancies coming for a ride to check out the noise then that would be welcomed. It`s probably not a problem but you know what it`s like when you get a new car - any noise needs to be checked 8-).

Darren

I've no plans to travel to Plymouth in the near future but if your ever near Bristol let me know.

Mine is the same.. From first to second, no matter what, it will give a couple hops. If I am in sport mode it doesn't jerk though. I have been driving it only in sport mode lately just to avoid that. It gets really annoying to have to feel like I'm re-learning to drive the car every time I get in. I swear the car is more moody than I am.

I have also been hearing a weird sound from the engine around 3500/4000 rpm. Kind of like a rattling mechanical noise. My S2000 made that noise and I was told I needed to change the diff fluid and get a valve adjustment. Does the BMW need those things? I think i'm around 13,000 miles. I had it in for it's oil service in October and they didn't see any problems but that doesn't mean anything as far as I'm concerned.

A rattle could be a vibrating heat shield on the exhaust or manifold perhaps :)

My 1st -> 2nd change is a bit iffy now it has got cold, my car lives outside

Oh that's just awful...you and Shipkiller are in the same boat!

Yeah, my 1st-2nd is notchy but much less so now it has 11k miles on it.... improved immensely by fitting the ZHP short gearknob... much nicer all round!

I'm wondering if this isn't the infamous work of the Clutch Delay Valve. I'm only guessing that the 4Z comes with one but know my 4ZM HAD one (before I had a dummy installed).
