1st to 2nd gear notchy

I've just purchased a Z4 2.5SE both 1st & 2nd are notchy when cold. I am having it looked at end of next week, so I'll let you know what BMW come up with

I have also noticed this, and it means that to shift from 1st to 2nd takes longer than I would like. I am guessing it just needs loosening up. Mine has 18,000 miles but i dont think a moto really ets its fee until at least 25k.

I'm wondering if this isn't the infamous work of the Clutch Delay Valve. I'm only guessing that the 4Z comes with one but know my 4ZM HAD one (before I had a dummy installed).

I must admit the CDV was my first though as well.

A rattle could be a vibrating heat shield on the exhaust or manifold perhaps :)

My 1st -> 2nd change is a bit iffy now it has got cold, my car lives outside

Mine is a bit clunk clunk too at the moment. Again my car lives outdoors. It does get better after a drive or if the temp is above 10 deg C

I've got 22K on mine, and it's still a little notchy. After driving my boss's souped up Mustang though, it feels like silk! Give it more time hon

For me, this occurs usually when cold but don't want to wait past 22k to have the 1-2 shift smoothen up. With that, I wll have owned the car close to three years !! With 9500 miles now, I'll be pressing BMW for the first oil change with this being one of the items I inquire about.

Are you saying you haven't had your oil changed in 3 years? Don't they change your oil once a year regardless of how few miles you have? I'll have less than 5k miles my 1st year and plan to have them change the oil then.

Probably not. The CDV delays the engagement of the clutch, notchiness occurs before you start lifting clutch pedal.

I took mine to the dealer a few months or so after getting it (it had 28k on it when I bought). The technician and I had built up a good relationship already as my roof hydraulics and stereo went within the first month or so, I had some extras installed, plus it needed it's inspection/oil change. He got in, shifted a bit and said, "nice and notchy...just the way a bmw is supposed to feel in 1st and 2nd!" Haven't worried about it since then.

yea, I have been thinking about installing a mod CDV for a while now. You're right that it probably won't do much for the 1st to 2nd notchyness, but the clutch engagement just doesn't feel smooth/right to me and I've been driving a stick for over 35 years. I might just try a modified CDV.
