1M. Anyone looking

I drove a v8 m3 and a 1m this year when starting to think about getting a second car. They are both very fast indeed, however I felt they lacked that sense of occasion you get from the e46 m3 and z4 m's. I don't doubt the newer ones are faster, but for me they were a less involving steer.... And ultimately less fun, which is what I wanted from the car, although I'm not after a daily driver so my priorities may be different to others!

too fast to be fun on the road though, you need a track to push it, i would suspect they are epic on circuit. z4 you can get away with being fun on the road :)

Hmm I disagree the E92 especially is a lot less raw that the Z4M much easier to drive on UK roads and isnt really that much faster, much more compliant. Same with the 1M, the Z4M is much more raw than both of them and is a better track car than the the M3. Standard M3 Manual is 0-60 in 4.8, Z4M 0-60 in 4.8, M3 Competition 0-60 in 4.6 and the 1M 0-60 in 4.8

If anything I would say the M3 is the tamest, it is a different type of car much much heavier has a completely different torque curve with the V8, the the Z4M it picks up in any gear and headbutts the horizon whereas the Z4M you have to wind it up drop it down. The 1M again is different because of the turbos.

Had an E92 M3 and also did the M3 Experience day at Olton park and it was great but you could tell it was carrying a lot of weight. But the DSG was awesome compared to the manual on the track, I think the Z4M would be a lot more nimble on the track and the M3 would be no faster as the Z4M would have it in the corners and the M3 only just having the legs on the straights.

We had one in Melboure red, Really loved the E92 one of my favourite cars apart from the E46 M3 we had but again the E92 is more grown up, and the E46 is more like an axe murderer, wants to be driven hard and stick its tail out like the Z4M, need to grab it by the scruff of the neck whereas in the E92 its not like that it more like warp speed and hold on.

But I would have an E92 over the 1M, having the Z4Mc as a weekend car and the M3 as the daily would be a perfect garage for me. Add a classic 911 and I would be a very happy man.

I have owned 2 E92s in the last 4 years, the silver one a manual and the white a Comp pack DCT. They are very good cars but I agree with the comments above about being in a way too fast to really enjoy on thr road. To get them going the revs need to be heading for the red and it is very easy to be doing crazy speeds. I feel that the Z4MC is rawer and more enjoyable.

It may be that I had the benefit of a 2 day BMW "Perfection" course at Mugello in Z4MCs back in 2006 so have felt that I can push the car and know what happens.

I also think that the Z4MC has not dated and indeed looks better than ever among todays new cars.

Perhaps i should have said that "fun" is more accessible in the Z's, i just find they are more communicative and alive to your inputs at lower speeds. By that i mean at real world speeds without having to resort to going on circuit to find the edge and the excitement.... To be fair to the 1M and the M3. They would be fatally flawed in their class if they drove like a Z. the whole concept of them is that they are as happy at Asda as they are going banzai at Silverstone. The Z cars dont have that compromise to deal with. All i was trying to say is that some of the feel is missing compared to a Z, not that they are in any way worse as cars, they are just different! I have no doubt the E92 and 1M are probably faster cars, but if we are talking purely about driving fun its a Z for me.

I had a Mitsubishi Evo 9 MR 360 a few years ago that was the quickest point to point car i've ever owned. It had computers galore controlling its 4 wheel drive, and a consquence of it almost doing the driving for you, i had more fun in an old 118bhp Elise i also owned despite it taking twice as long to get to 100mph it was just way more involving to drive and offered a sense of occasion missing from the tuned up taxi... lol

In a nutshell, smaller cars are more fun to drive than big ones and this applies to the Zeds

It's true; a e92 M3 is less raw then a Z4M and easier to drive... I drove one some time a go. They are almost equally fast. But, with a Z4M you have to be really on your mark and absolutely in the right gear when trying to keep up with a e93 M3.

I can confirm that a e92 M3 is almost equally fast on a track... A e92 M3 has 80 more Hp, but is also 200kg heavier. I drive a Z4M roadster (with CSL's, Michelin Supersports, AP brakes, Pagid pads) and my friend a e92 M3 (Michelin CUP +, competition pack, performance exhaust, oem brakes). On long straight (were horsepower makes the difference) then it can be difficult to keep up and the DSG gearbox makes also a difference in faster shifting times. When the corners are coming you can compensate the lower HP and have the advantage of the lower weight.

Here is me driving my Z4Mr behind my friend... It's a movie from our first ring trip this year. I only did a total of 20 laps back then and he knew the track better then me... But practice makes perfection and I'am now on 50 laps and counting 8)

i cant lie, i desperatly want one, the only thing that stops me is the z4m s/c is quite litterally the most fun ive had on four wheels..... id love one!!!!

So should we form an orderly que for your Z then. :D

Naah its a classic already but there is a hysteria about it for sure. I think how its remembered will depend on what BMW bring out over the next few years. It could be the tip of the iceberg!

Having said that i love my Z4MC to bits and cant see me swapping it for a sedan any time soon ;)

ultimately the Z has got the good looks and that rawness that marks it out from other M cars, even if its far from perfect. Yes the 1M and M3 are better cars in power delivery and handling but so what? Z is got to be more entertaining for all its faults.
