18i - 20i ?

I doubt very much they'd deliver a 1.8 and badge it up as a 2.0. That's fraudulent and very unlikely.
Yes, it's a yes for the 2.0. Mine is great and its no slouch. It's even more responsive in sport mode. Just run it in properly first.
You're going to love it!

I think that a big problem on this forum is that people incorrectly label the 20i as "2.0" and the 23i as the "2.3". To newcomers, adding a dot to the car name suggests engine size and can be misleading.

To summarise the available E89 models:

The 18i has a 1997cc (2.0l) N20B20 engine (straight 4 turbo) outputting 156hp.
The 20i has the same 1997cc (2.0l) N20B20 engine (straight 4 turbo) as the 18i but with an increased output of 184hp.
The 23i has a 2497cc (2.5l) N52B25 engine (straight 6) outputting 201hp (IIRC).
The 28i has the same 1997cc (2.0l) N20B20 engine (straight 4 turbo) as the 18i and the 20i but with an increased output of 245hp.
The 30i has a 2996cc (3.0l) N52B30 engine (straight 6) outputting 231hp (IIRC).
The 35i has a 2979cc (3.0l) N54B30 engine (straight 6 twin turbo) outputting 306hp.
The 35is has a 2979cc (3.0l) N54B30TO engine (straight 6 twin turbo) outputting 340hp.

In terms of the original poster's question - I would definitely go up to at least the 20i. I just don't see the point in paying ~£25k for a 156hp car. It will feel underpowered. You may as well pay £1k or so more and get the 184hp 20i.

Perfect

Always look up, down and across to see the differences and options/ upgrades offers.

Dead right 1K you have a much better deal and will get most of that back when px over the 1.8

The e85 I could not justify the extra 3K for the 3.0si v 2.5 SI sports. Sports had most of the goodies as the 3.0si except head light washers and electric seats and was only 0.8 seconds slower

For me I did jump to the 3.0 in the e89 but going from a 2.8 msport to 3.5i is still more than 4.5K but performance is even tighter with the 2.8 only 0.5 seconds slower so cant justify it.

It's a balance, I would live the 35is but honestly can't really afford. The 20i is a great compromise, for me I will get the enjoyment of a fantastic handling car and the open top.

Woops my excuse is that I came from the E85 which were it was 2.0i 2.2i 2.5i and 3.0i (+ the M)

It got a bit more confusing where post face lift they dumped the 2.2i and messed with the 2.5i to make SE and SI where the SE was de rated to 177 (old 2.2i) and SI got a uprated 214 bhp from pre face lift of 192 bhp, so they made a trim derivative a change in engine bhp as well. All the other engines had SE and SI but same bhp engines.

It confused me as I had an 03 2.5i SE at 192 bhp and the 06 2.5i SE was now a lower 174 bhp which I opted to get the 2.5i SI i.e. 214 bhp thats massive difference from a E to I on the badge easy mistake to make.

Its BMW thats made the confusion really. But its a bit coincidental that the 23i is really in between the old 2.2 and 2.5 range (0-62) and that they had a 30i which was exactly the same as the 3.0i.

But you are correct and from now on I am post decimal point man.

For note there will also be differences in trim and trinkets as you go up. I would also doubt that the 18i is exactly the same as the 28i in terms of engine services and components, that £6.5K must be on something other than a remap.

I come from an era when the first number was the model and the following numbers were engine size (no decimal) 316 was 1.6, 320 was 2.0, and 323i was a 2.3. Simple.

So what does the labeling 35i denote if its really a 3.0 (2979).
Crazy confusing.

Iv being in touch with DMS and they recon they are a month or two away from sorting the remap out, you are looking however at £795+ VAT. Gains I believe are around 30+BHP 30+NM however these are not verified yet.

I got this reply from a re-map guy on Sunday ref 2.0 Turbo.
Thanks for the chassis number. Checked the BMW parts disc and as I thought, your car is using the new type of Bosch engine control unit that cannot be programmed via the diagnostic port. It can be programmed on the bench but BMW have located the ECU under the inlet manifold so half the engine has to be removed just to get to the ECU.

Well strange I have already posted a remap plug in for the 28i for under £500 giving 60bhp so 305 bhp

I think this may be one on the reasons why it's so hard to get hold of anyone who can or is whiling to do this remap.

I suppose it's smart on BM's part though.

Kellners Sport already has a map for the 20i & 28i for the factory ECU

http://www.kelleners-sport.de/en/New...wer_20-28i.php

X1 sDrive20i/xDrive20i, X3 xDrive20i, 520i, Z4 sDrive20i:
Standard:
max. power: 135 kW (184 hp)
max. torque: 270 Nm
Kelleners Sport:
max. power: 162 kW (220 hp)
max. torque: 324 Nm

X1 xDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, 528i, Z4 sDrive28i:
Standard:
max. power: 180 kW (245 hp)
max. torque: 350 Nm
Kelleners Sport:
max. power: 216 kW (294 hp)
max. torque: 420 Nm

What is interesting is that they are talking about a 20i having the same turbo and engine as the 28i other than brakes why cant a 20i push to 294 hp

thats the one, web site also has 3 yrs wrt on engine and train so £332 + vat ummmm im in

I got the 1.8 - I would have had a 2.0 or older 2.5 but the deal for a 500 mile second hand car was too good - I am thinking about remap (never had one before) as going from a VW dual clutch auto 1.4 TSI I am noticing it to be a bit slower.

Have you done the re-map - how did it turn out and did it improve the engine note?

I got the 20i and not the 28i after advice from the BMW salesman. he told me after a few months I would be able to remap the engine, no problem.

Have you seen this:

http://www.tmcmotorsport.com/Default.aspx

Looks pretty good to me considering early days with this engine.

Yeah I did although I don't think it covers the 1.8. I was trying to find the detail of the engine warranty as well. Never done this before but at under £400 sounds great. So you haven't done it yet then?

As stated above I think, I'd be very worried about modifying anything with a factory warranty for fear of it not being covered in the event of it breaking (not hugely likely but not impossible). Unless you're willing to take the plunge and pay for it oneself :?

Does that cover damage to the engine or just a warranty on the kit that they sell? If it's the former it sounds ideal
