18i - 20i ?

I have recently put a deposit down on an S Drive 18i M Sport, got a great deal with an outstanding contribution from BMW and the dealer, so naturally I was tempted.

On reflection....

I'm coming from a new shape Audi TT 1.8 tfsi s line and realise that the 18i is hideously underpowered. The Audi rips it to pieces! I do however prefer the BMW (truth be told I always have!)

I have since changed the order to a 20i M sport, the deal is not as good but I do feel I'm getting a better car overall. Granted its not a 35is but I've a few more years before I can even think about getting one of those!

Basically a call for anyone's opinion on the 18i and the 20i what are they like?
Could I get away with the 18i or do I really need to go for the 20i?

Thank you in advance

My colleague has just taken delivery of what she is certain is a 1.8 s drive m sport (even though the badge on the side says 2.0) paid for extras aside Im really struggling to see any difference to my 2.0 s drive m sport. That's both dynamically and cosmetically. Real world driving not absolute hooning.

Hope that's of some help

The 1.8 specs at "maximum power output 156.1 PS (154 bhp) (114.8 kW)
at 5000 rpm"
The 2.0, 183.5 PS (181 bhp)

You've got 30 extra horses in the 2.0.

Bluespit, why does she think its the 1.8?
They're the same engine its just down to tuning.

Is this a yes to the 20i then ;) ?

Not really sure, she says that what she ordered, thats what's on her paper work and that's why she got such a great deal. Ive never seen a 1.8 but I'd assume the badge on th3 side would say 1.8. It clearly says 2.0 though. It's very nice in pearlescent white with red leather

Ps, my name is Gary

Cheers

Difficult to say, if her car is a 1.8 then I think I'd be happy with it, if it's a 2.0 then I know I'd be happy with it. I'm not intending to change mine but if I did I wouldn't want any less performance than I have but would be tempted to go for the 2.8 if the deal was right

Cheers

The 18i would definitely say on the side I would have thought !?

Thank you for your thoughts and comments its good to get advice of someone who owns that particular model.

I do like to go out and find a nice road, so a nice chunk of power as you come out of a corner or a boost for the odd overtaking just incase.

I'm ordering a new 2.0 on Saturday but getting it debaged
Have a 2.3 at the moment, not tried the 2.0 engine yet but the wife wants a new car and she likes the Z4only problem is the colours are boring at the moment!!!'

I doubt very much they'd deliver a 1.8 and badge it up as a 2.0. That's fraudulent and very unlikely.
Yes, it's a yes for the 2.0. Mine is great and its no slouch. It's even more responsive in sport mode. Just run it in properly first.
You're going to love it!

they are both the same engine but the 1.8 mapping is different to give less output....what i dont get is why you think the audi rips it to pieces...the one you have only put out 158hp...compared to 156 for the z4...in the real world they are really close...the BMW will feel every bit as fast...in fact i think the 0-60 is slightly better than the Audi.
i have a 30i and debated going for the 35i...glad i didnt cause the one i've got is vicious!!!

its upto you but i'd go with the better deal cause it wont feel underpowered!

by the way the 35i is the same engine as the 30i (2998cc but with a twin turbo).....although i know what you mean.....they are not exactly 'badging' the engine size with the new names

I drove both the 18i and 20i, there really isnt that much difference between the two. If it were between a 20i and a 28i then I could understand the hesitation.

I think it just depends on how much you want to pay for the car. I was happy with the 18i especially the price so I'm sticking with that until my insurance gets lower and I will skip straight to the 35i after :D

The N52 and N54 are completely different engines. Take for instance the fuel injection (non-DI vs DI) or the valvetronic system, even the displacement is different. The N52 is partly made out of magnesium. Quite some differences...

well fair enough.....i'm new to bmw so i just went off what i was told....i'll shut me gob!!!!

I have ordered the car today and gone for the 20i M Sport with heated seats as extra, everything else standard. Extremely happy with my decision and think iv made the right choice.

All being well should be picking up 2nd sept :)

Then I guess my colleague has either got a very good deal, a dozy dealer or she hasn't read her documents properly. It has auto lights and wipers but no cruise control. I think it's a 2.0 to be honest. Either way it's a very nice car.

atom1 good that you have jumped up the 2.0. I would always go for the biggest engine for you price, look for offers like free M sport upgrade. Reason you get more bling as the engine goes up so its not just a few K more for power but may have other trinkets to tempt you.

Ive seen lower deals for the 2.8 msport lower per month than the basic 1.8. with just a bit more deposit.

So congrats. would be interesting to see what could be pumped from a 1.8 with a remap

It will be even more interesting to see what I can get from the 20i :)

Iv being in touch with DMS and they recon they are a month or two away from sorting the remap out, you are looking however at £795+ VAT. Gains I believe are around 30+BHP 30+NM however these are not verified yet.

For that reason I'm glad I went for the 20i as it is around 1k more than the 18i. No point in spending that sort of money on a map when the next rung up is so close. You do get a few extras as well with the 20i including more power and importantly better residual value.

You are right as well, i did in fact get a better deal on the 20i, in the form of a larger dealer deposit.
