17 or 18 inch wheels?

I read the bit in bold and wondered if I'd typed the reply and forgotten. Only the "Q5" bit proves it's not me.

My E86 on 19s is a firm ride... definitely don't recommend if you want comfort, but the more times I see them on there the more I like them, and comfort is not the point of a Z4. That said I do very much want to try 18s on the Z4 for comparison's sake.

I think 17s look silly small on E85s, but then again I'm not sure that an E85 benefits from the visual appeal of 19s as much as an E86 does.

Agree....19s look awesome

Nicely refurbed 108's look nice IMHO. Worth at least having a decent refurbishment guy have a go.

I like 17s for performance and comfort reasons, but think they can look quite good depending on the wheel chosen!

Then again, I might be a smidge biased...

(Ignore the rear arch gap, had just done some brake work and the rear end was still settling).
I never imagined that a 17 inch alloy would look decent on an E85 but you've proved me wrong.

17s look excellent with a lowered, purposeful looking car.
They're lighter, quieter, comfier and cheaper than 19s.

Yes, I currently have these 17 inch wheels with proper Michelin Pilot Spot 5 tyres and the car drives really nicely with them. I'm worried I would be trading driving enjoyment/usability for looks.

If you are happy with 17s with good Michelin tyres I'd be inclined to stick with them.

But you could always try those 108s to see how they feel before you get involved in refurbing them, although if they have run-flats it won't be an equal comparison.

This is what my Z4 looked like when the owner two before me was selling in 2021 (one day I will have it back to this standard I hope), albeit with 30k more miles on the clock. 19s for the win. The alloys need a refurb now. Silver, gold, bronze, graphite / dark grey?

Are those the Brembo 6 piston front brakes?
If yes, I'd love to know what wheel they are as I've always assumed 17's wouldn't clear those huge callipers.?

They're the Brembo 4 pots from a Megane RS (the mod quite a few on the forum have now done).

It was a challenge to find a set of 17" wheels that fit over them. I contacted Apex about it as I originally wanted a 17" set of SM-10 or ARC-8, but neither of them would fit (other than the non-concave version which I didn't want). They convinced me that the VS-5RS would fit in 17" with a concave design (17x9 ET30), but they were just too expensive to justify.

In the end I went with Bimmerworld TA5R (17x8.5 ET38 front and 17x9 ET42 rear) from across the pond, which fit nicely over the Brembos.

I can tell you my opinion.
I thought about various 18" wheels, but then you get 255 tyre width in the rear. From what I've read, you will just introduce more understeer. Also, at least for my 2.2 with 170hp I don't think that I need a wider tyre to put power down. I also believe 18" is a heavier wheel so again, worse performance (not that I would notice that but I like efficient things haha).

Only pros I have seen with 18" are looks. Maybe if you have 3.0i or supercharged one it makes sense to run 255 because you need to put the power down.

I also don't like to risk rubbing the tyre so I have only looked at OEM ones for E85/6. I believe BMW engineers knew what they were doing. Aftermarket wheels have some stupid offsets from what I've seen from various manufacturers. Everyone says there is no rubbing but then you introduce your car to Misha Charoudin and you can hear stuff.

After all the research, I will just be lowering my car a bit and putting some bilsteins, while keeping my 225 style 105 wheels for a livelier back end.

After all, it all depends on what you want. Every direction you choose is fine. :driving:

Go for 18" with non-RFT, it drives just nice, don't worry about it

Both are E90's wheels and have ETs as if you had 13mm spacers all around.

I looked at style 189 from E90/2 but I have read on the other forum that on M sport suspension there is some rubbing. May not be true, who knows with what people are doing to their cars

et34 at the front doesn’t usually cause problems, even on M-Sport.

I have some rubbing though, on the spot where the bumper meets the fender, just behind the outer edge. I'm hoping it will go away when I replace the shocks.

More likely the springs, as the shocks should not affect ride height.

It was suggested that old shock allow some movement that causes the wheel to rub. It doesn't rub on top of the wheel arch, it rubs at "10 o'clock" if you look at the left wheel. There is some weird shape of the cover, it sticks out for some reason.

Other people with spacers or lower ET wheels have no problems on their cars with OE M suspension. So there has to be some problem that causes mine to rub.
