108's. Do I really need to split to refurb?

Mostly Holland. Sometimes UK.
So the 108's are off for Crimbo while the winters are doing an admirable job of wading through the slop and slime on the damp Dutch roads :D
Hence, thinking about having me tatty 108's refurbed while theyre off. They're in a frankly shocking state. From a distance they're not that bad and you can't really notice but up close they're hideous. A bit like some girlfriends I've had

I've been to this geezer in Amsterdam a few times now over the years and he does a cracking job for not much money. The last set he did were some 18" Breyton Magic's which looked brand spankin new after he'd finished with them and lasted yonks!
Spoke to him over the phone and he reckons he wouldn't have to split them to refurb them. But I've read numerous times about the requirement to split these wheels and everything that it entails and then the risk of post-refurb laquer peeling in any case.

What's the concensus? Buy some new-uns or refurb these without splitting?

Don't have any close-up pics and I don't fancy wandering down to the shed in me onesie just to take some, so here's a from-a-distance pic... :P

Tidy!
How long ago was that and do they stay good for a while before going off again?

Couple of months ago - As you can see, the corrosion starts between the two pieces and around the bolts. Guy did mine in 3 days, hopefully they'll stay tidy for a good few years.

At some point I am going to need to get mine done but I have been put off quite a lot by a friend at work who had his 108s split and refurbished. They look fantastic but since having them done he has a bad vibration around 60mph. He has had the wheels rebalanced twice and it makes no difference. It wasn't a problem before having his wheels done. The only thing I can think of is when they reassembled they got the wrong spokes on the wrong rims. I don't know how likely this would be to create this problem?

The centres and barrels are different front to rear. What may have happened, is that when powder coating, whoever has done it has coated the mating faces, and the coating may not be uniform. This WILL cause the centre not to sit flat and give the problem you mention. When I had a set done recently, the mating faces were masked off and just given a light coat of clear lacquer to prevent corrosion. They went back together easily, with no problems.

Ive heard of this with forum members 108s numerous times & a couple of possibles could be the cause ,
If they were sandblasted without pegs in the holes sand can get in , then when the wheels are bolted back together the bolts dont fully tighten due to the sand .
Or when put back together they simply tightened the bolts once & thought that was it , but if you go back to them 24 hrs later very often you can get another quarter turn on some or all .
Ive had countless sets powdercoated on all surfaces & never had a issue with faces not bolting up tight though i suppose it could happen if painted unevenly ( unlikely with powdercoat )
As DLV points out the centres are different front to back , the bolt holes being marginally deeper on the rears

OK. All sounds like a bit of a pallava. A bit hit n miss re. the outcome.
What are the options for refurbing without splitting? i.e. stripping the existing paint via an acid bath...then dipping? plastidip etc?
I've already had mixed results with dipping my winter wheels and have needed to touch up a few areas. Also palavarama :(

I wouldn't bother if you aren't having them split, unless it's a quick cover up to sell. They'll start peeling in no time..

Plus any 108s ive seen where they all get painted the same look gash  especially the bolt heads which should always stand out imo

As above Chris its a big no without splitting the rims there is no point on a refurb be like polishing a pair of shoes covered in mud no point.

Had mine done a couple of years ago

split
stripped
powder coated rim
painted centres
diamond cut lip and all new bolts look so much better.

Cheers Chris the price was £600 that includes storage of the car for one week but the offside front centre felt dry so they had to do that again keeping the car an extra week so they took £60 of the price and paid all my train fares.

This is not cheap but I do live in the south near London so gonna pay more and they were recommended on a few car forums plus they did a great job when fitting tyres to my wheels in the past very careful all wheel nuts hand torqued.
