108 wheel bolts

Just split my first 108 and started cleaning/sanding. Does anyone know what the bolts are? Am I right in thinking standard BBS M7 25mm thread?

Cheers.

Andi.

PS I guess you'll need a picture.

I,ve just measured a bolt out of a 108 and they are 25mm long and 7 mm diameter

Are you renewing all the bolts ?

I was thinking about it but seen them at £5 per bolt so maybe not !! One, so far has a dodgy head, the rest probably OK with a clean at that price.

Before I buy some new ones, does anyone here have any they want to get rid of? Not sure how many I'll need as I've only taken one wheel apart so far.

Andi.

I will have some yes. I've recently split a spare wheel, and killed on bolt, I have a wheel that only have 15 bolts as a s**t load snapped, I need one, so will have 14 spare.

I don't know if you need the advice, but if they're being stubborn, and start to round off, they can be saved but you have to be barbaric.

I got 19 bolts out of my donor wheel, one rounded right off. I smashed a bigger torx (not spline) bit in and that rounded off but got a tiny turn, so then I went for it, got a really quite big torx bit (t45 or something silly from memory) smashed it in with a club hammer and then hit it with a buzz gun, it came straight out.

So if they do round off, don't fear too much. If you already know this, I apologise, but thought it may help.

Let me know how you get on with the wheels and I'll sort you out with some bolts if you want? I just need to get together some funds to have the parts of my wheels that need doing refurbed. (two drums, one star).

So far only the one head looking iffy so would want to replace that. I'll let you know when they're all apart but that could be a week or so yet.

Thanks for the advice, yes I've had to use brute force in the past to get some nut's/bolts undone

Andi.

I only put the advice in due to being flimsy 12 splines, they round off quite freely.

Another wheel split and another bolt gone - this time though the head came off!!! So it's time to drill and try the old extractor. Some others on this second wheel were actually loose.

@RJS So that's 2 so far ;-) if you could put some aside for me.

First wheel is about to be primered (is that the right word?).

Cheers.

Andi.

LOL, now you're in a world of pain.

The problem is, the bolts are steel, the wheel is ally. Essentially, the worst combination chemically for getitng them undone.

Good luck getting that stud out, having five "studs" has meant me getting a new wheel, I think you'd be better off to just keep the head and chemical metal it on once it's all back together. I'll keep some for you no problems.

If you get it out though, take some pictures as to how please... I'd love a go at mine.

One down three to go.

Three studs removed from the next wheel using a pillar drill and a platform to support the wheel level with the drill platform. I put my drill on the floor and made a wooden support, I used a new drill bit for each new hole!

Grind off bolt to a level face, carefully mark the center and drill a pilot hole. If you get it dead center drill a 6mm hole and use a 7mm tap to remove remains and clear a new thread. If you get it offcentre then ...

Additional battering may be required.

Be careful to manage the drill depth as if you go drill too far the tyre won't inflate!!

Very interesting! So have you ruined one so the tyre won't inflate? :o

You're not local are you? I could swap you removing some studs for some bolts? ;)

Hmm Sarf London, not too far actually, Tunbridge Wells, I'm sure we could do a deal but it would have to include drill bits! They are about £1.60 each for the pilot drill and the 6mm drill bits are about £2 but would probably last a bit longer that one hole.

I would of course take no responsibility for any damage caused but I think I now know how to do it, maybe let me see how my next wheel goes, but I'm happy to have a go.

Suberb news on the location, of course I'd supply drill bits, and not hold you responsible, it's a favour after all.

I could bring the wheel bolts with me too :)

You have a pm.

Silly question!

What size star bit are the bolts? And where can i buy them from?

I got a t40 in my tool box, doesnt seem to grip very well, as it has 2 spokes to few :(

They are an M8 12 point Spline drive.

I used this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0012M7O18/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00 with a 3/8" drive handle.
