A big thank you to all posters who have detailed the corrosion problems with the 108s .
Just had 4 new rims fitted .Would not have realised if it was not for the forum ...
Thanks guys and Gals

But I can tell you the corrosion will come back soon. My set was replaced last year under new car warranty, and wheels are now about 1 year old. Very minor corrosion can be seen on the outer rim after the winter.

I think you have to keep them very clean all the times, even in freezing winter. I think the road salt and water increases the chance of corrosion.

I Know,I Know :headbang:
But give me a few days of belief :D
Interesting all my corrosion came inside at the join ...like bubbling epoxy filler .
Fortunately the car is a "dry day " treat so I can control exposure to some degree and I have the challenge
of keeping them pristine from new :|
But thanks for the warning

I'm in a real dilemna about my 108's, all 4 are pretty well affected by the dreaded white rot corrosion and as the 3rd owner of the 05 plate car I've written off the idea of claiming from BM. A local refurber in Sleaford has offered to either have them sent away for an OEM finish for £500 which comes with a 12 month guarantee, or he could apply a contrasting paint finish to the inners and lips for £300 where a grey metallic would seem to fit well with the black body colour.
On the one hand I'd prefer OEM style but if they are only going to last a year then is it worth it? On the other would the colour scheme on the outers look cool or a poor substitute? I'd appreciate some help from anyone who has been here! :o

Run a search or 2. The 108 refurb debate/argument and options has been covered several times. Colours, different finishes, recommended refurbers, etc.

I refurb them myself and actually decided to start a 2nd set this afternoon as I have some more ideas, so will see what I come up with :D :D :D

same dilemma I had with mine...

solved by purchasing a different one piece style :D

Once my 108's start corroding, i'm going to use them for the winter tyre set.

Apart from winter i'm going to get myself a set of different wheels. Maybe CSL reps, or others..

thanks CJ, will be interested in what you come up with,
thanks also to you 2 also - mmm , thought occurs I could keep the 108s with RFTs as is and take some others with standard rubber for the summer, creative thinking! :P

Like anything with a liitle effort and preventative maintenance you can almost eliminate the corrosion problem on 108s

Wegras, what process did you go through to get your rims replaced?
I went to Hexagon last sunday and they said i need to drop the car off to them this week so they can have it for the day and make their decision!! I thought surely a few pics would have been sufficient...but apparently not.

Yes it will :poke:

I look after my wheels and this time the corrosion has come back for a very simple reason and that is there is not enough lacquer on the inners to cover the ridge indicating where the weights should go. I wax my wheels and always clean properly they are just over 12 months old and only done 7k, havent been treated any differently to my last set.

Manufacturing Fault plain and simple.

I had what looked like a hardened bubbling filler round the inside join where star meets the meat of the wheel .No other marks on outer surface.
Took it to to my local Dealer Ocean .The advisor came out to look ,immediately went back to get digicam for photos. He sort of agreed this was not " unusual "
They forward to BMW who should approve ( as they did ) took longer than should because of Easter and "ships passing in night " but required one chase to get back on track.
and than sorted quickly 4 x shiny 108s I have already coated in AG wheel protector hope it does what it says on the can

wegras - did they replace them with the earlier version which has a machined and polished inner or the later' revised' version that now has a cream almost plastic coating. Outside lip and 'star' are the same on both designs.

Interestingly I was at my buddies wheel place this morning and saw a '53 zed that had just been sold and he'd done the wheels. Dealer specced no split and quick job, spray the rotors and calipers too. (gotta do what the customer wants  ) Interestingly they don't look good when done that way. You can see faults where the paint doesn't bridge the gap and they'll go again in months, plus they look 'flat'

What amazed me is an average condition '53, halogen lights, sterling, black interior, standard seats, bit grimy, etc. sold for £13k :o
Summer prices are back

Wish I had known :headbang: Looks like the polished rim inside

Depends what you wanted. I was just curious if they were still using old stock or onto just the new ones

Looks like old ones ..would have preferred a solution based replacement ....oh well

CJ, BMW are replacing my rears for the second time in 13 months even though I'm out of warranty. I will let you know what I get, although when the dealer spoke to me before I said anything he would check them as he knows I want clear lacquered inners only.

Should know in a week or so.

Might be a manufacturing fault but the point I made is that if you look after them you reduce (or in my case eliminate) the corrosion - plain and simple! :poke:
