Have they said when this change came about? Only ask as my old wheels where the painted type, but were on an 04 plate car...

No and did not ask. Have they been refurbed or owned by you and know to be painted since 04?

I never established whether they had been refurbed. They were what came on the car - was just wondering if they were original wheels or not.

Yes two of those have the new finish. Looks like the fronts on that pic.

Agree there - def a mixed set.

I'm always concerned with sales that suggest that they were taken off after 2 days because of minor flaws.

Gannet they must have been refurbs, bothe mine and breakers were both turned/lacquered and they were newer, mine was built Aug 06

Maybe already replaced under warranty before you bought the car?

I suspect given that even BMW UK did not know that there had been a change of coating it is a fairly new change so unlikely to be older warranty swaps.

I bought the car in Dec '06 as approved used, so it is possible the dealer put new ones on before I picked it up - or the previous owner before they sold it. Most of my damage was self afflicted though - damn kerbs

Brief update - BMW have confirmed that they will exchange the new painted finish for a new, older style polished inner. They want to supply, fit and balance and handle it as a warranty claim. Suits me fine so long as I get a full set of identical rims.

It does beg the question of the future when say a rim is damaged and a new one is required after the stock has gone, but that's a future worry. For now I suggest anyone who has polished inners and is thinking of getting them sorted make a concious decision about how many, timing, etc. so you don't end up with mixed sets.

Still waiting for the outcome with mine. It's sat with BMW Customer Services at the mo (apparently!).
Thanks for that. I'll use it as evidence should the dealer start playing up!
Tell them to send your painted one to my dealer!! :P

As the warranty on mine has only 15 months remaing, I have decided to not polish the inner rims anymore, as I would like to get them replaced under warranty. Any protection will lengthen the time to corrode and potentially result in the dealer not wanting to change the wheels because the corrosion is not bad enough within the 3 year period.

What do you think?

Risky strategy, but makes sense. See what they look like after the Winter then decide what to do.

Problem is they are not going ot get better, so need them to get worse before the warranty runs out, dont get me wrong will clean them, but wont protect them.

Cant see what else I can do at this stage.

I made a claim on my 108's last week. They are replacing them with the M performance (101s) for free.

I'd probably do the same as you, like you say - what else can you do?

I think that now you can say knowingly that sometime befre September '08 they changed the design over to a mre corrosion resistant inner finish it can but strengthen the case to demand a full set replacement under warranty. I'm sure if they have started to go then a Winter of salt and water will speed them on their way.

On a different tack I'm wondering if running a thin clear silicone bead on the inner join and a well worked in one on the outer woudl offer some protection by keeping water out of the obvious weak area? Any thoughts on this?

CJ

As you say the fact the changed the design should help when I need them replaced. Regarding the silicone, this is something that has been mentioned before, and something I though about doing as soon as I picked the car up, but generally it didnt seem to be thought of as a good idea. One problem could be water penetration from the outer join, and this would not be able to escape on the inside and maybe trapped.

We need to find somebody who has tried it.

SR - as mentioned I would also be working a bead in from the outside (but ensuring it was deep enough to not be visible). Clearly once breached it then does the reverse and could become a trap, however I'm sure wheels become warm enough from heat soak out of the brakes and tyres to gently dry it off.

Comment from one who has done it woudl be valuable.
