108 Starspoke Rims

CJ sorry didnt read your post properly  , I cant see that it could do any harm to do both sides, it can only help. Wont be easy to get a bead on the outside without being visible though, I think close masking would be the only option with clear silicone.

Can you just confirm now that the dealer has changed all your rims with painted ones?

thanks

No. Not all.
At the moment I have 1 painted one on the rear. I am having the other rear changed to painted on Friday 10th.

They will not replace the front wheels as so far there is no sign of corrosion on them (checked on a ramp with a high vis light. I was there), even though I said they will corrode at some point! BMW won't except them back under warranty until they have signs of corrosion. The painted mod is a fix, not a re-call. :? (I still think this can be down to the dealer mind! I'm not convinced mine is pushing hard enough to be honest!!!).
I'm not worried that the fronts are not painted as you won't notice because of the size of the disks, but it just looks odd having 1 painted and 1 polished on the rear at the moment!!

I just have to make sure my front wheels start to corrode before my warranty is out!! UK winter road salt should sort that one out!!

I would have though it would be less noticeable having painted on one side of the car and not the other, rather than the rear wheels being different.

But interesting to see how the dealer has handled it. I have three wheels with minor issues so would demand 4 be changed as this would not look right, my dealer has changed all four before when only three had issues on my 3 series.

Like you I need mine to corrode before warrany expires end of Dec 09. So no more polishing the inners just a wash, and maybe not so often.

Actually no. Have a look at your 108's and see how noticeable the inner rim is on the rear compared to the front. Now imagine one being the colour of yours and the other being a light white/grey colour! It's way more noticeable than pictures show. If you were buying my car, you would pick it up straight away! I don't think you would if the front and the rears were different though. 2 odd inner rims in a pair front or back you can blag, 1 odd rear or front rim side to side you couldn't!! :P

I'm confussed  , also wonder if my front brakes are smaller than your's.

Years ago I had two wheels refurbed, including centre caps as they were large alloy pieces, but couldnt get orignal badges, found some slightly smaller, I made sure I put the refured wheels and centres on one side, as you can only see one side at a time so very hard for anybody to notice any difference in paint etc.

But anybody who knows about 108' would probably look closely at all the wheels and pick up any problems.

At the end of the day I dont want odd rims on my car, certainly not front to rear as these can be seen at the same time, but we shall have to wait and see, just hope they all corrode over winter and get then done without issue.

Rotors on my front brakes could possibly be bigger than your as I have the 3.0si. Not sure though.

I would prefer all the wheels to be the same also, but this is the best I can get by the sound of it and I would be stupid really to get the polished rims now as a replacement to the rears considering BMW themselves have admitted they corrode by bringing out the painted/enamelled ones.

Breaker, in some ways I would still prefer the pre painted one, because I dont plan to use them certainly not for long, looking at M6/CSL reps etc.

I think the pre painted onles look better, as the wheel is so open having only 5 small spokes, but either way new clean wheels would do.

There is no doubt the all silver look better than a cream paint finish given how open the rears are. That said I'm sure the change of design has been done by BMW due to the number of warranty claims.

I'm just waiting to get to the dealer to get my new silver one fitted.

Finally got the warranty exchange fitted today, so at last a near perfect set of 108's with polished inner for around £280 including all the associated tyre swapping and fitting, balancing, etc. :)

Since I sold my ellipsoids on I'm at break even, so happy bunny, until the corrode....

Oh well, the 108 may corrode, the M wheels are just plain bad quality. My rears look like they have been pebbledashed

Already been replaced once ...

Question on the style 108 Starspoke rims, oft called 'split rims'.

in the 18" size were they only available for the Z4? Part numbers consist of 36116758194 / 5 being 8J front and 8.5J rear. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do?part=36116758194&showeur=on The one size front and rear seem to cover all the Zeds by engine size and the the E85/E86 coupe

I'm trying to find out if they came with a different part number associated with another Bimmer model, specifically in a different offset?

No help here but what did you do different to force a new browser to open with your link....

HATE with a passion how this site doesn't do it.......

Cheers

put your link in between [ url ] link [ /url ] tags... without the spaces

Had a look at some split rims in a VW garage today, and they were diamond cut laquered rim edge, but the inside of the inner was all a light creamy colour... I wonder if this is some special kinda finish for these kinda finishes (diamond cut inners) since VW are using what BMW apparently are as well.
