Hi guys, I dropped my alloys off to be refurbed on Saturday, the guy explained he may not be able to get the lip to that mirror finish??? What have you guys done when it comes to refurb?

Also he asked what colour I want them in, I said standard but anyone else gone for a better colour? Any pics??
 
Good refurbers can polish the lips to mirror finish and then lacquer them. I've even done my own - it's not difficult.

Alternatives are to spray them silver ot poweder coat. More durable but less attractive.

Which colour is personal and there are several threads with people going fron standard, through various shadow chromes to anthracite and gloss black.
 
My rims are polished with the spokes the same colour as the car, Sapphire Black. They were done by the previous owner but I think they suit the car really well.
 
So why is he saying he cannot polish? Is it because it's cheaper than most @ £20 a wheel? It's the 1 in bham city powder coaters?
 
The corrosion generally starts between the spokes and the lip, where water, salt and grit accululate. It also gets hold on any chips in the rims lacquer.

Spraying the the 2 parts the same colour won't make any difference.

Some cheap refurbs attempt to do them without splitting but I'm not sure this is a good way to protect, just a way of avoiding splitting them.

HalfColin's look good in black on black. Mine in smoked/flash chrome look good on sterling grey.
 
Anyone done anything funky with these? I don't think they are splitting them to powder coat anyway so would have to be same colour?
 
If I were you I would split them before you take them in to avoid the issue altogether.

My centres are black gloss and for the rim I did have polished/lacquer but then redid them with base/paint/lacquer.

The painted rim has been far more durable in my experience.

Notwithstanding your apparent extra-curricular activities, wouldn't lipstick be easier and less painful? :oops:
 
My wheels were powdercoated, centres powdercoated in gloss black, lips in silver and laquered. They were split during refurb. I put two layers of Pourboys wax on the whole rim before fitting to car.

Mine were split, cleaned, dipped and powdercoated with a high bright silver over a black base to give depth of colour. Powdercoating does seem a clumsy way to finish the wheels though and has trouble following the details in recessed areas a wet paint finish would be better.

Wow I like them thing is I doubt he is splitting them for the money I'm paying! What colour shall I tell em to do to match yours, there mint
 
I believe its 'high power silver' topcoat over a black base coat. If you put it over a lighter base coat it goes a bit chromey which looked a bit dodgy from what examples I was shown at the time, the black knocks down the internal reflections and gives a deeper shine. I had to have mine split so they could polish out the corrosion on the outer rim properly - they are then coated and reassembled :)
 
Well they may have to split mine to refurb cus I int paying if they are crap! I will call them tomorrow and ask them to do the same as yours, also to split if they can. Thanks
 
Im just about finished refurbing a set I bought before Christmas , I got the tyres taken off and then split the wheels and took them to a specialist who blasted them down to bare metal for 20 a wheel and I have sprayed the centres in Peugeot steel grey metallic . I have sprayed the inner rim in a dark silver and the rim is bare polished . The wheel specialist wanted 80 quid a wheel to do this . They need to be stripped down as I can't. See how you could avoid painting over all the small bolts .
 
Arghh help, I just phoned him and he has blasted the whole wheel, refurbing them and spraying the whole wheel silver with a small sparkle! He said they will be like new, but I asked about the small nuts and they have been left on the wheel when doing this!!

Basically the nuts are going to be the same colour as the rest of the wheel Inc the lip? Is this ok?
