Anyone's here?

Exactly what does a cat D mean anyway? I mean if it's just a case that the insurance company has deemed it not cost effective to repair yet the work has been carried out to a good standard then what's the problem? The seller even implies that BMW still honour the warranty which is interesting - is that normally the case even after a write-off?

"A: It means the car has been written off in an accident.

A Category C or D write-off is one that insurers consider unecomonical to repair but one that could, given enough time in the workshop, be repaired and returned to the road.

Category A and B should never be returned to the road. A Category B write off is one that is so badly damaged it can only be used for the salvaging of spare parts, while a Category A is one that is sent to the crusher"

Quote from What car above :D

Category D

"The least damage suffered of the four categories e.g. vehicles replaced under 'new for old' schemes, vehicles written-off to minimise hire charges.

The vehicle can be safely and economically repaired either by the insurer / motor trade or by an enthusiast using cheaper parts and reduced labour costs. The PAV (Pre Accident Value) does not exceed £2,000 (£1,000 for motorcycles), or for more expensive vehicles, where the engineer's assessed repair costs do not exceed the PAV"

another quote above. Just check with your insurance company as some can be funny and increase premium.

Well I was in the market for one but then settled for a standard 3.0 si Coupe, but this just seems remarkably good value!

There isnt anything wrong with buying a Cat D, so long as you do your homework.

As its been written off by an insurance company and most likely sold through a salvage yard to a private individual, and subsequently repaired, you just need to be confident of the quality of the repairs. Its unlikely they will have been done through a main dealers due to cost - but thats not to say the repairs havent been done to the highest quality - You just need to check.

If you are serious, I'd suggest you get a full inspection done by RAC/AA with them paying specific attention to the areas of damage.

So long as your satisfied its been repaired to a high standard you will have a great car for a bargain price.

Just remember resale value for a Cat D is typically 25% lower than a non-HPI recorded car.

Salvage cars are a bit of a hobby of mine, so if you need any more detail, feel free to drop me a PM, and I will try and help further. :)

After a vehicle has been involved in an accident the owner will contact his or her insurance company, they will generally fill out an accident report and forward it to the insurers and the vehicle will then be inspected by an insurance assessor either employed by the insurance company or a freelance insurance assessor who will also fill out a car (all vehicles - motorcycles, vans etc) accident report and assess the damage to the vehicle.

The assessment of the vehicle included in the car accident report will be based on the financial cost and the assessor will then decide whether the vehicle should be repaired or declared a total insurance loss, a write off. In other words it is not worthwhile to repair a vehicle if the cost is greater than a replacement vehicle or the sum insured.

If the assessor decides to declare the vehicle a total loss it will be placed into one of four categories:

* Category A: Scrap only (i.e. with few or no economically salvageable parts and which is of value only for scrap metal
* Category B: Break for spare parts if economically viable (excluding any residual scrap value)
* Category C: Repairable total loss vehicles where repair costs including VAT exceed the vehicle's pre-accident value
* Category D: Repairable total loss vehicle where repair costs including VAT do not exceed the vehicle's pre-accident value

Hoper this helps in any future decisions.

Just had a look at the ad, and realised its DavidCh's car - Seen it in the flesh and it is as good as it looks in those photo's!

If only I had the cash I would snap it up in an instant even though it might be recorded. Seems more than reasonably priced!

Thanks guys for the responses, and sorry for the repeat post.

I'm not sure that I'm that serious as I only bought by 3.0 coupe a couple of months ago, so would probably need to sell that first anyway. But it does seem one hell of a car for the money!

This was posted up not too long ago http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=13293

As i said in the other thread, it wouldn't put me off buying it for that price. David has owned it for quite some time now and has looked after it well. The repairs seem to have been done to a high standard, just like mine was after my accident last month. Mine drives perfect and you can't tell it's been in an accident, just like with this one too.

If the seller HAS documented the repair with photos and receipts I think it would be great value. If not I’d be a bit nervous.

However he or she has been very honest in the write up so that’s reassuring.
