How does Viv or other new members know what is expected of them without our guidance. I just think it’s wrong to jump all over someone just because they join to sell a car, so what if they do I’m sure if the car was a great deal Forum members would be all over it. I have also seen posts on FB where someone is selling and they’ve been pointed to this Forum.
Agreed 100%. I remember that I recommended the forum recently to someone who was a member of our FB page up in Scotland on the basis that someone on here might grab a bargain before it hit Autotrader. Alas, the pile on was exactly the same as this one.

If someone sends you a hand written thank you, are you obligated to thank them in writing for their written thank you? Slippery slope, that's why I never say thank you for anything...
NO but you MUST invite them back to dinner again!-:)

Did this person you recommended start by introducing themselves and saying that you had sent them this way?
If they did then I don't recall seeing that thread?
Honestly, it only takes a polite couple of words of introduction, followed by a meaningful advert where it is obvious that someone has taken the time to write a tailored description of their car, with all the salient points included.
In this case though, it's just a pile of photos.
And no! I don't like the AI generated adverts either.

I haven’t read any posts since the first page, as it was clear things were getting silly… again.

Here’s my take:

I don’t care if someone joints to sell their car. It’s free and nobody has to pay to be a member here. There’s arguably less use in a sarcastic post than there is from someone trying to sell their car to an enthusiast or someone else who has joined without a car and wants to buy one.

I have an E89 and I bought it just under 2 years ago. I started posting shortly after buying it and have encouraged others who are looking to sell to sell through forums like these. It gets cars into the right hands and it’s an opportunity for that car’s online history to continue.

I’ve seen helpful posts and I’ve seen disgraceful posts here. Nobody on here other than the ones who pay the hosting bills have any rights to critique innocent behaviour that ultimately benefits future Z ownership.

AI slop on the other hand should always be discouraged and blocked at the first opportunity!

I think the conflict here might be that you (and many others) see this as an online community and perhaps you feel like you someone has walked into your clubhouse unannounced and tried to sell you something? Whereas others others who come along might have no reason to distinguish this forum from a FB group or any other website where there is much less of that sense of community?

I've put question marks on the end because I'm just guessing and don't want to tell anyone how they feel about anything, but there's definitely a disconnect between how some long term members see the forum, and how non-members see it when they come across it. Maybe we need to do a better job of managing expectations?

Thinking about it just now, I've done exactly the same as the OP here (albeit with a better advert and much more unusual item IMO), while selling wheels on a Skoda forum. Three posts, all for that purpose. In hindsight, you are right, I should have offered more of an intro.

Maybe there's a compromise that can be reached so this discussion isn't repeated every few months?

Down to Spectre then to say what he’s happy or not with.

But presumably he’s ok with it as he’s not said anything to the contrary, so if that’s the case then it’s wether members can say anything to someone using the place for a free ad, personally I don’t see a problem as it might benefit someone here, but I’m just one voice obvs, so then it’s down to is it acceptable to pop a bit of sarcasm on said ad, well if it isn’t then no one can say anything anywhere, you can’t not say something in one place then say something in the other depending on wether someone might be offended, and if we go down the you can’t say anything route then that’s the end of the forum.

Simple thing is it’s a free forum, with free speech, and as with anything some will be ok with it, some won’t as you’ll never ever get everyone agreeing on everything, so personally it’s carry on as is, not much alternative, not that there should be any.

Well I'm going to carry on being sarcastic regardless. It's the lowest form of wit and something I have finally mastered.
Yes, I do treat it as a community: more like a proper old owners' club.
If I didn't have that feeling about it then I wouldn't spend so much time trying to help others.
Most of the established members must surely have sussed me out by now anyway. I have absolutely no interest in knowing what they think of me or my approach to this forum and life in general. I would still do my utmost to assist them if they needed help.
So apologies in advance as I'm sure it is only a few posts more before I annoy you all again.

Big ‘IF’ you annoy anyone it’s because they want to be annoyed or find something to be offended about, you’re one of the most helpful and knowledgeable blokes on here, and very funny too.

So really it’s their problem, f**k ‘em…🤣🫣😉

It's one of the things I like most about this forum, the sarcasm and friendly banter. Unless it's aimed at me of course. 👊

Given you're able to sprinkle them for free in many places nobody is going to entertain that here..IMHO..in reality its a decaying audience ....sadly the other media out post this site many times over..
