What would your next car be?

As a long term Porsche guy - everything from 1969 to 2006 - and now a very happy E86M owner (along with a 1M, Z3 3.0 Roadster, 1970 911, Peugeot 205 GTi), I know that going from an Z4M to a Boxster/Cayman/Standard 911 of the same era would be a downgrade in thrills. You’d need a much newer Porsche or GT Product to get the same thrills.

(And BTW, just one air cooled 911 was sold to buy the three BMW’s.)

Hmm.. interesting.. well i just bought my next car.. well i haven't yet, as it failed the MOT just the other day, so the current owner is responsible for fixing the tie rod ends and an oil leak.. so hopefully that will be sorted in a few days. and then ill take ownership.
its a 2.0 Z3 2000 manual. not much power, but the car is in really good nick, aside from ofcourse the suspension, bushes and what ever else can perish in 200k kilometers..

its a project..

I don't honestly know, there's nothing that appeals, I'm becoming a minority in a cul-de-sac of EV's (with the exception of a 944 that occasionally pops out of its garage further up)

Before my house purchase, I had an idea to sell the TVR and Z4 and drop a bit of cash on either an earlier V8 Vantage or a V6 F-Type. This was around 2021.

V8 Vantage - it's an Aston. It looks awesome, inside.. dated and , and less refined and functionality than the E86. Power wise, it was good, but slower and less engaging than the TVR. I looked at problems and repair costs e.g. light cluster etc and it was pretty pricey, although the owners club had good guide to work on them yourself. However it was the fuel costs that got me. "If you need to worry about fuel, you can't afford one," I get it, but, The Z4 averages 30mpg and 40mpg on a run, but the V8 Vantage was 12mpg and 17mpg.

F-Type - It was the reliability that really got me. It was also slower than the TVR and negligible between it and the Z4. Add in higher fuel costs and tax and combined with the mileage I do, it wasn't worth it.

If I was going to change, and it would be "my car" (not taking the dog etc), I would probably go for an Exige or possible a 4CC.

Owned a 2.5i for nearly four years, change of cars looming meant it was likely to be my main car (albeit I work from home). Decided the replacement for it was a 3.0si and happily one popped up on the forum a couple of days later. (Spent a month's redundancy pay on it, started my next job a month early. Worked out for the best.)

Not sure I could find a replacement for the Z4 under £10k now, possibly Porsche-wards but you're talking more like double that for anything as fun I think. In the meantime I went completely the opposite direction and picked up a StreetKA for £1k as a runaround. I hesitate to say cheap runaround - the road tax is the same cost as the Z4, and its worse on fuel! Total hoot, and makes the Z4 feel refined.

Funny you should say that as the only options I can think of for my MC are a Cayman or a manual R8, unless I got very brave then maybe a TVR 350C!

My next car -

Sensible - I could replace the E86 with a 130i from a similar year

Next toy - MX5 (or 50 year old TVR or TVR 350C or Tuscan or Sagaris if the money comes rolling in from somewhere unexpected!

There you go a photo of R400

I am interested to know what you think of driving it. I have looked at 'Lotus 7' type cars many times (mostly Tigers), but couldn't cope with the driving 'experience'. Loud, uncomfortable, cramped, very basic, fear of rain constantly. I always thought they are great for a blast up the road and back on a sunny day, but nothing else.

If I were to get a car of this 'type' it would be a Cobra rep with a stonking great yank V8. Just as impractical, though. :p

The main reason I built my Fauxrrari was because I couldn't afford to build a proper Cobra (or be bothered with the SVA or all the extra work).

I'm interested that no one has mentioned Jags or Mercs?
I am interested in an XK-RS coupe but they are just too much money for what they are at present. And I'm not sure I'm quite old enough for Jaaag yet.

They don't interest me because they don't make sports cars, theirs are more in the GT-Tourer mould - and finding one with a manual gearbox is like looking for a needle in a haystack!

Have you had either before? Miss my 130i and strangely, recall having more fun in my mk1 and mk2 MX-5s than I do in the Z. Not so in the mk3 or 4. The Z beats those.

In terms of keepers: a Z4MC or an E46 M3, to sit alongside my current Z4MR. Not to replace.

In terms of the daily, I'm probably going to get the i5 Touring M60 to replace my Audi eTron A6 Avant.

This is probably my next..car.. Iveco Eurocargo , I’ve checked quite a few for sale here already, but they are all single cabs, I am waiting for a dual cab (like pictured) to come up. Build an overlander on the back and drive from Dxb to SYD taking around 9-12 months when we leave here..
