What have you done to your E89 today

The new engine mounts actually made a substantial difference.

Later this summer new front tires, sway bar bushings and maybe tie rods (if worn).

And they’re on!

In the end I opted for Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 tyres in 255/35/19 and 235/35/19 configuration. The whole set were just over £500 from National Tyres with a code.

Very happy with fitment after lowering her down and giving her a quick turn around to settle things a bit. I may need to reduce the rear spacer size a smidge (currently 20mm) but we shall see how I get on.

Otherwise there appears to be plenty of clearance elsewhere.

For reference, I am running Bilstein B12 suspension.

Today I have had a pair of Kumho ECSTA SPORT PS72's (non RFT) fitted replacing the 5 year old Bridgestone POTENZA RFTs that were on the front when I bought the car in January. The Bridgestones were horrible, terrible tramlining and made me feel very uneasy at high speed on the motorway. Bless the guy at Protyre, he came out and said the old tyres are fine are you sure you want to replace them (they did have lots of tread), I stated my reasons and he understood., but good for him, he didnt want someone to replace tyres if they didnt need to.

I asked them to swap the wheels so the new Kumho's are on the back and the 1 year old Kumhos (ECSTA PS71s non RFT) that came with the car are now on the front with 34psi rear 32psi front. Went for a 20 mile blast after and OMG feels like a differenet car! The Kumhos are rated but I would usually have gone with the PS4S, but I want to get some 18" wheels on the car in the next 6 months so didnt see the point in spending twice as much for tyres. Though I do really like the ECSTA.

Maybe I'm getting old. My TT is on 18" BBS wheels, with Bilstein Pro+ suspension. The handling is sublime. But, with the Z4 I actualy don't mind the 17" wheels and SE suspension :/ It's pot hole city around here so the extra tyre wall is nice. The Z4 doesnt handle like my TT, but I'm not sure I mind that much, now I have rid of the RFT's, Im not sure spending a grand on the Bilstein kit for the E89 + wheels is worth it. I actually like it how it is... controvesial maybe, I dunno. May add some miltek spacers though just to fill out the arch a bit. 15mm rear and 10mm front. Maybe the Eibach pro springs?

Looking at it I think it looks great. Bigger wheels, lower...... I dont know.

I put a set of Kumho Ecstas on my car in 2021 and have been really pleased with them, although I had to replace the rears last year.

I couldn't get Kumhos in time so I went with Hankook Ventus and they are every bit as good, and slightly better in the wet.

Big service this week: oil, fuel filter, micro filter, plugs, brake fluid, diff oil. Also had top mounts and drop links when it was in.

Collected it on Friday and couldn’t have asked for better weather!

We were at a tractor run in Dromore last night and when I started it to come home it was running really rough, engine light on etc. I limped it home and plugged it in and it showed a misfire on cylinder 4. Not one for dabbling in anything mechanical, I thought I could at least try swapping the ignition leads between cylinders to try and pinpoint if the lead was faulty (given the plugs were just new). I opened the bonnet and discovered cars these days don’t have ignition leads 🤦‍♂️😂- the last time I had any experience with something like this was 25 years ago on dad’s MGB. After a quick bit of googling the same logic could be applied to the ignition coils, so I swapped 4 to 3 and went for a drive. Still in limp mode, but the code moved to cylinder 3. I tried it again on cylinder 2 and the same thing happened. I ordered a new coil last night and collected it this morning. Swapped the part out and went for a drive- normal business had resumed.

Obviously a very minor issue in the grand scheme of things when compared to the work undertaken on other threads here, but for someone that does no mechanical work bar changing wheels I was pretty chuffed with myself!

I also got some Gyeon Trim for the faded black grills (was actually for the Mini but it’s a bigger task). Applied it last night and made a massive difference- let’s hope it lasts!

FWIW it’s not a great idea to fit mis matching rolling circumference tyres…the stability control system can’t cope with large dissimilarities..resulting in unpredictable results just when you need it..🙈😳

Damn it. It would have helped if I’d read my research properly. Turns out I should have bought 245/35 for the fronts. Oops!

-2% difference on this setup. Retrospective research suggests this is within the margins the DSC system can deal with.

There are no specific documented and agreed limits..the generalised advice is to keep it with 1%…I know for a fact that at 3% that it doesn’t work..found that out the hard way..later post DSC 60E versions had different logic…

It’s up to you what you do..I’m posting it for others who may see this as good practice ..which it’s not..

Yeah, you’re right. There’s a lot of anecdotal info out there on percentages and learning ability of the DSC system but again, it’s anecdotal.

I’ll run this as long as they’re legal and make the switch to something as close to 0% when they’re worn down.

I’ve also learnt that there’s more room to play with than I envisaged, due to the divorced shock and spring setup on the rear axle.

Anyway, all purchases for another day, providing there continues to be no silly DSC behaviour on a daily basis.

I never had any problems till the one day when I deliberately provoked it..it then did a 270 degree spin with all the warning lights on..

MK60 DSC unit does not 'learn' in fact it needs to be explicitly coded / programmed when certain items are changed.

Bought a new (use) idrive controller know of ebay for just £23 !

My 'knob' is wearing out..the paint coating is showing the white plastic underneath due to excessive use..

I toggle the MMI Carplay and iDrive satnav back and forth all the time plus lots of music selections and carplay use..

Finally earlier i drive knobs had 'CD' in the top left..decided that the later 'Media' label more appropriate..

Its the little things in life..hope it works OK..says its made March 2017!IMG_0072.JPGIMG_0071.JPG
