Hi all,
Considering swapping the orginal gear knob to a weighted unit. Did this in my previous e92 m3 and it made allot of difference to feel.

Wondered if anyone that’s done this advise on best place to purchase and if this was a straight swap?

Pic to show the type I’m referring to..
TIA

A ZHP is a straight swap and the best place to buy is from a BMW dealer if you want a genuine one.

Part Number is quoted by Mhc04 on the previous page. Now and again Vertu Motors do a limited time discount (typically 20%) on their Ebay listings, otherwise Cotswold BMW and Sopers of Lincoln always seem competitive if you can't wait!

I had a solid billet one on my old M5.

It lasted about a year before it was removed…as it was freezing in winter and roasting in summer.

When I removed it, I realised the previous owner had removed the ‘slot’ that the standard gearknob clicked into, so had to glue the new one on.

Thanks. You have confirmed my worry about these. I have the zhp knob and find it a little small for my hand hence my interest.

Does the //M badge make it heavier though ;)
I've never seen a ZHP that didn't have the "M" on it. It seems to have been a standard fit on E46 3 Series Sport models which also had M badges on the steering wheel and road wheels, like facelift Sport Z4s did. Just a shame BMW didn't fit the ZHP as well. :(

I bought my zhp gear knob from ebay. Make sure its a genuine one though, the cheap after market ones look the same but are not as heavy. It's a straight swap just try not to break your nose when you remove your old one.

Part number 25117896886.

Hi all,
Thanks for all responses.
After thinking, I’ve decided to go for the zhp unit (part number quoted) based on it looking original, being nicely weighted and figuring with the nice weighted feel I can live without the illumination and also live without the hassle of the f10 M5 shifter surgery (been there before). 😀

One last question… what happens with the standard illumination wiring when you fit the zhp. Does it tuck up inside?

👍🏻

Yes, it just drops into the centre console.
Great, thanks, just through the gaiter I guess?

Also, when pulling off, is there danger of breaking this cable as attached? 🤔
