Hi all,
Considering swapping the orginal gear knob to a weighted unit. Did this in my previous e92 m3 and it made allot of difference to feel.

Wondered if anyone that’s done this advise on best place to purchase and if this was a straight swap?

Pic to show the type I’m referring to..
TIA

100% do this on all cars

Can’t compare pre vs post on the M as Garrie did it before I purchased it

On stock knobs they all seem to sit too high too?

I bought my zhp gear knob from ebay. Make sure its a genuine one though, the cheap after market ones look the same but are not as heavy. It's a straight swap just try not to break your nose when you remove your old one.

Part number 25117896886.

My MC already had a ZHP fitted when I bought it. :D

I fitted one to my previous 3.0Si and it was a huge improvement. I bought from Cotswold BMW for £57 in 2017 because as Mhjc04 says only the genuine ZHP ones are weighted. Now and again Vertu offer a discount of 20% or so on their listings on Ebay if you can wait.

Or if you want an illuminated ZHP you can buy one for an F10 M5. Part number is B25.11.7.284.205 but it comes with the leather gaiter attached so it needs some surgery to fit that to the plastic bit that clips into the Z4 console, which is why I haven't got around to fitting mine yet.

And it costs the best part of £200. :(

Apart from the M5 gaiter issue either is a straight swap, but if you do change yours make sure you disconnect the wires for the illumination on yours before you pull the knob off!

Yes, I did the same mod with the f10 m5 knob on my previous e92 m3 and had to perform the ‘surgery’ so have 1st hand experience 😊

Assume the other part number (25117896886) kindly shared by Mhjc04 isn’t illuminated?
Strange as the oem one is ?? 🤔

That one isn't illuminated, but then it was never an M part.

The part number Mhjc quoted is what I fitted to my 3.0Si, and was standard fit on E46 Sport models.

Not an M but I had the ZHP fitted when I got my normal coupe. After a while replaced it with a Storm shiftknob and it made a big difference, would recommend 👍🏻

Had ZHP and Storm, the Storm looks stunning and wins hands down on feel and improved shifting but the ZHP looks original.

Dont know where you life or if yiu have a rodster but how does it do in the sun? I can live with it being cold but don't want it burning me.

I’ve put two Storm Motorwerks Version 2’s on a couple of my Zeds and also a version 1

No problems with the sun, if it's in your eyes wear a cap and glasses, if it's too hot for your arms wear a shirt and if it's still too hot put the roof up and turn the air con on. We live on Dartmoor so not usually a problem for us but it's never been a problem in hotter climates. Oh! and get a Stormwerks knob.:driving:

Actually it was a serious question. Would love to get one but have read too many comments now about burnt hands. In johannesburg on a hot day I need to either put the roof up or put a towel on the seat when I park or it's too hot to sit on.

Likewise if I leave my sunglasses on the passenger seat for 10 mins the frames will burn my face if I put them back on without leaving them in the shade.

I fear these lumps of solid shiny metal are wonderful in a continually cool and damp or rainy climate but for places that have more than 300 days of strong day long sunshine a year.. Not so much. I guess that's why peolle buy little hoodies for these things.

Anyway I would rather have this climate than your climate and a metal gear knob. Much more conducive for z driving.

Sorry I missed out the towel and gloves and good luck with finding any car without a substantial metal content. Sounds like your best bet would be a hat and a camel. 😂

I had a solid billet one on my old M5.

It lasted about a year before it was removed…as it was freezing in winter and roasting in summer.

When I removed it, I realised the previous owner had removed the ‘slot’ that the standard gearknob clicked into, so had to glue the new one on.

Anyone here willing to weigh their genuine one so I can check whether the one that came fitted to my car is genuine?

Fitted this weighted stumpy job from halfords recently.... quality is great, good weight on it too... also gives that shortened throw feel...
