Road Tax a car just for the day???

Full month only from our super generous Government.
I have often wondered if it is worth just using the car and if caught taxing the car immediately. As the tax runs from 1st of each month, the car would be taxed, just you paid for it a bit late. Be interesting what the fines/ courts situation would be with doing this.
I have tested the theory with toll charges at Thames crossing. I paid a day too late and was issued a fine. I contested the fine as the fee was paid by the time I got the fine. The fine was dropped in that instance.

Odds on being caught are low, but don’t you risk it being crushed?
If you were smug that "the car is taxed now" after bring pulled and you purchased on your phone, even the nicer police might get wound up!
They can certainly confiscate the car, you would need to find out what the penalties are, and how much it costs to get it back. Could work out cheaper to pay the impound fee?
Not sure if they would crush it to make an example.

I'm sure your insurance company would look at any opportunity not to pay out if you were involved in an accident, I'm sure paying the tax immediately after being caught/or involved in an accident will leave a digital record (date and more importantly time). The weather was nice here yesterday but you can see the salt just lying about on the roads, so I spent the day cleaning the car and then back in the garage.

I could be wrong here, but if you set up a direct debit to pay it, the car is counted as taxed immediately, even though the first payment isn't taken until the 1st of the month? So you could do that, drive it for a day, then sorn again before the first payment is taken?

Im sure they still take it out on the first of the following month but then give you a refund 10 days later. I was thinking along those lines when I came to sorn and noticed that.

Peter it was cleaned down at BMW when it had its mot and brake fluid service this week, but by the time it was dropped off it was dirty again! I spent some time cleaning the cabin and the seats and then (much to the annoyance of my neighbours) brought out the big guns in the form of my petrol driven jet wash and snow foamed it. I'd love to get it ice blasted underneath and then protected.Did you drive it and clean it ..or just clean it?..asking for a friend…
I'm sure they could do that, do they bother because there are loads on untaxed cars on the road, any one been caught?
Sadly to use it for a day means paying for a month.
I used to have a solution but my mate in the trade didn't renew his trader's policy last year so can't use trade plates any more.
The only other option would be work out a route with no ANPR cameras and cross your fingers, then if it all goes wrong tax it for a month!

I love the way you just involve people with your comments. I am sure that you would never risk being out in an untaxed car. Do you just sit back, chomping on your favourite snack and smiling at the comments that you knew would come?
Simply wouldn't risk having no tax, you'll soon be caught and if stopped by traffic police it's likely they'll seize your motor. I'm pretty certain you can't just tax it at the roadside if caught. Chances are no tax may also invalidate your insurance or certain policies contained within.
When I traded in my last motor the new motor was delayed a week and the MOT and tax was due to expire on the old car a few days before. I was going to risk it but sods law would dictate if i'd had a bump on the way to the garage to pick the new motor up my insurance would have been invalid with having no MOT. Ended up getting it MOTd and taxed for the few remaining days I had the car.
Ain't worth it.

I think our local force considers lapsed tax the least serious of no MOT, no Insurance, no Tax. Depending on how long you've had it SORN, and whether it is actually in a road-worthy condition or not.
As you say though, your insurance is likely invalid due to small print which is somewhat more serious, especially when the law of sod applies and someone else clips you. Just not worth the risk.
Seems like plenty of people get away without having tax, so I doubt there's much risk of getting caught. I'd also guess that if you do get pulled over and it's your first time, you look respectable and you pretend you forgot then you'd get away with it.

I guess it might be worth it for some if they buy a motor for 200 quid and not bother with insurance, tax and MOT and run the risk of having the motor confiscated and a few points on their licence. It would still be cheap motoring until caught, depending on how long that would take.

I just think out loud. I have never driven an untaxed car but often wondered what the actually problem would be.
I watch a lot of these "police interceptors" type programs and they don't seem over fussed by no tax.
