Road Tax a car just for the day???

I guess it might be worth it for some if they buy a motor for 200 quid and not bother with insurance, tax and MOT and run the risk of having the motor confiscated and a few points on their licence. It would still be cheap motoring until caught, depending on how long that would take.

Tim.
I forgot to MOT my wife's car for three months a couple of years ago (it was an honest mistake with dates). She drove the car every day on major A roads for a full three months and never had a problem.

I also drove on a revoked licence for nearly five years  as didn't realise. All due to moving house a lot and not updating the addresses with the DVLA, because it didn't seem overly important at the time. I never had a problem in all that time, luckily. I only found out when I needed my licence details for something so phoned the DVLA. The nice chap in Swansea told me about my revoked licence. There was no problem and he just re-issued it without any fuss. There was no fine. It hasn't even impacted my insurance premiums as they are dirt cheap.

My point being, I don't think anyone would have their car seized, or be thrown in prison, for driving an untaxed car for a couple of days. I am not going to be the guinea pig, though! ;)

No, but it does have to be booked in with a mot station, which must be no further than an hours drive
I have not found any distance requirement for that anywhere though. Whenever I see this discussion the conclusion is that it could be in Scotland when you live on the south coast as long it is pre-booked.

You'd definitely make it onto an episode of Police Interceptors! No it's a real 250 GT so its exempt... oh no its not! 🚨

The amount of time that thing spends on the road, I would have to be REALLY unlucky to get caught. There are definitely no ANPR cameras in my garage.....I checked. ;)

I live in yellow-belly Lincolnshire. Abiding by rules and laws are purely optional in this part of the world.

At least if you lived in Norfolk and got stopped for no tax, chances are the copper would be related to you......like 'uncle dad'.

When I was 18 had a suped-up 1300 mini in a very distinctive colour sheme, I took my grandad for a drive in it, taking it nice and steady at 30mph then suddenly this Police SD1 Rover comes flying up behind me with the blues and 2s on... so, I pull over and all the time my grandad is saying 'bet you were speeding!', got out of the car to discover it was my dad driving the Police car! He said he couldn't resist it!

Gov uk seem to suggest the fine for no tax is £30 plus 1.5 times or 2 times the tax due. Hardly a seize your car and go to prison offence, more a 'pay the tax you owe, plus an admin fee'

I wonder if they would take a dimmer view if you were involved in a serious accident, as it may be seen as an aggravating factor indicating a lack of regard for vehicle regulations. If there was a fatality: Causing Death while Uninsured/Unlicensed: While tax is not insurance, if the, lack of tax led to the insurance being invalid this carries up to 2 years in prison.

If you arent taxed, you also aren't insured.
It is £30 + 1.5 x tax amount.

They can also clamp the car, with £100 to release it and if it’s not paid quick enough they can impound it as it’s not insured.

It’s all at the discretion of the officer.
As you say tho, it would be unlikely to get stopped, but also if you have an accident and you are not insured, it could get bad.

No tax means no insurance? Don’t think so, not related. Also, you drive an untaxed car to an MOT station for an MOT as you can’t tax the car without MOT. Would be a bit of an issue if you were not insured

Each policy is different, but they don’t need much of an excuse not to pay out!!

This is supposedly a hypothetical anyway. No one is seriously gonna drive an untaxed car on purpose.

Sort of is. The small print of insurance will say the vehicle needs to be 'road legal' and 'roadworthy'.
They don't like paying out when everything is legit, so they have a brilliant excuse if the car is not road legal.

I am sure I heard somewhere that in a fault claim, the insurance would pay out on the third party but you would be on your own.

My small print with Admiral says you are insured without tax (that includes SORN as well then).

Back in the 80s I bought a car towards the end of the month and hoped to get to the start of the next month before taxing it. (Money was tight as I had just bought my first house).

But I got spotted - in retrospect going into the centre of Brighton on a Saturday probably wasn't a smart move!

Anyway the BIB told me they'd be checking in a few days and if it showed as taxed there would be no further action, so on Monday I joined the queue in the Post Office and heard nothing more.

I presume you were able to walk OK after a few days. You know what they say....."sex with a woman is OK, but you can't beat the real thing". :)
