Best Z4M R tyre choice - hit me with it :)

Hi chaps,
Think I’ll soon be needing x4 new boots for my new (to me) Z4M R wearing the original 224 18” wheels.

Any chance you provide expert opinions best tyre choice for fast road (all year round).

I have a feeling the answer will be Michelin PS’s (currently wearing Michelin Pilot Super Sports), but any opinions on this with competitive prices per corner would be awesome.

Hi Adam,

When I collected my MC it was a cold, drizzly December day and I found the MPSS tyres fitted hopeless, although they were great on warmer dry days.

Anyway I changed the 19" CSL Reps for a set of 224s and had a set of Kumho Ecstas fitted which performed much better in the cold and damp, and I found them equally capable on the road in good conditions. Set of 4 cost £400 from Black Circles in April 2021.

Then last year I needed new rear tyres for a trip to Scotland as I was expecting some rain (wasn't disappointed) and got a pair of Hankook Ventus fitted which were a step up from the Kumhos in the wet and just as good in the dry. They were £292 for the pair in May 2025, although I did go up a size for 265/40s.

I know these are both mid-range brands but for road use I found them fine, but everyone tends to have their own preferences so expect a range of answers!

That’s all on E89s..although I know a well tuned E85M on PS5s and having spent a couple of days in seems to ride dam fine on them..
 
I have had Vredsteins, Michelin PS Sports .But last year I put Kumho Ecstas on each corner. Being a summer driver couldn't comment on the winter months,but I was and am impressed with the drive so far. The acid test is would I buy them again Sure would.
 
Pirelli PZ5.

Upgrade on the Conti SC7, but for some reason most Internet car people dislike Pirelli so they never get mentioned.

All the tests I’ve seen of the PZ5 have been on front wheel drive cars..in fact only Golf’s..

It would be interesting to see a test on some powerful rear wheel drive cars..

Was the size up on the rear and just for width?
Thinking of doing the same… no issues ?

about 600m into my mps5s and happy so far but the car is new to me and had supersports on the front so anything would be better than those
im on 18" 224s

Well I had 255/45 Kumhos on the rear as I thought it may improve the ride, but it made little difference so with the Hankooks I've gone for 265/40s for a bit more rim protection!

Wheels are standard 224s with no spacers and although but it is about 18mm lower all round (on H & R coil-overs) I've had no rubbing issues.

This. Don't skimp on tyres. They are the best value improvement in all aspects of your car. Ride, handling, noise, safety etc.
 
GY Assy 6 also seem louder than previous versions, although that could be due to the new tyres having sharp edges for while.

I'll also try SC7s next given the reviews, although I've never really liked any Conti's so far.
 
FWIW IMHO tyres and chassis / powertrain combinations are a mixed bag…

On the E89 I’d say the SC7 is the top dog..GY Assy 6 then the MP4S..not seen an E89 with MP5S..all very close but discernible

What works best on the E85 I don’t know..I’d assume broadly similar to an E89 and not like say a Golf which is so different in so many ways..
 
If its pretty much always above freezing and you prioritize grip, I'd go 200 treadwear. RS4s/V730s are a good choice, although V730s are terrible in the rain once they become slicks.

If any snow/ice, I'd go DWS06+ or P Zero AS Plus 3

All those tyres are not available in UK/Europe afaik
