Best Z4M R tyre choice - hit me with it :)

FWIW IMHO tyres and chassis / powertrain combinations are a mixed bag…

On the E89 I’d say the SC7 is the top dog..GY Assy 6 then the MP4S..not seen an E89 with MP5S..all very close but discernible

What works best on the E85 I don’t know..I’d assume broadly similar to an E89 and not like say a Golf which is so different in so many ways..
The qualities of a tyre don't change depending on which car they're on...

The tyre is probably the most important part of the suspension system but not the only part..long long history of certain tyres that perform well on certain types of cars and less so on others..

So the design of the tyre obviously doesn't change, but how it interacts with the rest of the vehicle matters greatly..otherwise..in a similar logic you could apply the same shock and spring to any car..

Continental SportContact M3 worked fine on an e46 M3, but were s**t on a Z4MC due to the different suspension / alignment and stiffer chassis.

…and yes, I drove both cars on the same tyre.

On the same theme, the Aston Martin DB7 / Vanquish was fitted with Yokohama AVS Sport, and on the basis of that I fitted a set to my e34 M5…but removed them a month/3000 miles later as they felt no better than budget ditchfinders.

The S2000 is notoriously fussy over tyre brand and tread pattern. I found a poor tyre choice would upset the handling and lead to a thrumming from the rear at motorway speeds. Changing tyres resolved both.

Hi Adam,

When I collected my MC it was a cold, drizzly December day and I found the MPSS tyres fitted hopeless, although they were great on warmer dry days.

Anyway I changed the 19" CSL Reps for a set of 224s and had a set of Kumho Ecstas fitted which performed much better in the cold and damp, and I found them equally capable on the road in good conditions. Set of 4 cost £400 from Black Circles in April 2021.

Then last year I needed new rear tyres for a trip to Scotland as I was expecting some rain (wasn't disappointed) and got a pair of Hankook Ventus fitted which were a step up from the Kumhos in the wet and just as good in the dry. They were £292 for the pair in May 2025, although I did go up a size for 265/40s.

I know these are both mid-range brands but for road use I found them fine, but everyone tends to have their own preferences so expect a range of answers!
I’ve been using Hankook Ventus for years on mine - and our other cars. Not fallen off the road yet, and they give all the grip I need for my style of driving.

Love the MPS4 and 5, you won't run out of road wet or dry with either, I did the ring on 5's last year in the wet and they were very good. If you want to do track days then pick up another set of wheels and a set of AD09's. It's only money, just listen to the voices in your head. 🤑👍

They are so loud tho... and too sticky for the output of our cars. The MPS4 MPS5 i think is more suitable than the S variants - MPS4S MPS5S.

Depends how you like to drive but I like the Z with a bit more movement. The S varients are designed for much higher HP outputs whereas the M these days is very much run of the mill hot hatchback territory. Not 5-700hp that most fast cars are these days.

On the z4m I've tried a few different tyres,as I've always liked Vredestein Quatrac/Ultrac etc,but found them not as good all rounders on the M as on my previous 3.0i. I've predominantly had Michelin SS,Ps4,ps5 etc and while not quite as good in the wet as the Vredesteins, they are my favourite option all round. Yes there is cheaper options, but currently on ps4 and ps5 and find them great for my often Spirited driving style.

Yeah,I'd agree with that,Tom. I think the 4s/5s only came in 19" ,as weren't listed in 18 inch when I looked in the past.
How's things going with you?
Hopefully see it and yourself again sometime.

John's old Imola/Imola M is still looking great,it's a credit to you mate.

Ye I have them on my CSLs so 19s.

All good, hope you are too! Just busy have 2 kids and away with work alot so hard to get the time! Easier taking it to events than the road trips these days.

Cheers ye as with all of them it always needs something! I will have owned it 7 years this year, tempted to move it on as been the in Z4M for 15 years now but houses and kids get the priority! 😅 Also not much to move to that isnt a significant investment.

CS7 are superior to MPS5 in my opinion and experience, tyre tests confirm the CS7 perform better too.

I have put PS5s on the front of my Z4M and I'm disappointed in the grip.

PS5 are not even as good as PS4S, so I am not surprised. They are in different categories.
