What have you done to your E89 today

Following on from my using some Hyperco 96nm/mm rear springs in lieu of the broken, rusted (maybe coil bound) 70nm/mm orginal Ohlins spring.., I decided to tackle the front end.

As Ohlins only made one kit for all E89s I pondered how they manage with say a 28i Manual with 1480kg weight 705/774 f/r and a 35is at 795 / 815f/r to work out one set of springs would work..given I've got another 30kg at least plus roof down..say 870kg rear..

Sadly Ohlins UK distributor couldn't find any of the 70nm/80nm spare springs..not helped by refusal to disclose the actual part numbers..

Repeated searching for a solution finally resulting on a chap selling a set of Ohlins R+T springs for a Boxster 987.2..and voila..some brand new springs 70nm/80nm for a snip..about 25% of the Ohlins price if available..

So got these brand new babies..

In addition these Hilka spring compressors look like I can compress the springs in situ to reduce their height to aid removal..and then use them rebuild the coil overs with the Ohlins R+T Boxster 80nm rear springs!IMG_0849.JPGIMG_0848.JPGIMG_0847.JPGIMG_0846.JPGIMG_0845.JPG

Didn't realise this was a Chinese special. Can get the same one from AliExpress for around £60 delivered.

As always if you’re confident it’s EXACTLY the same go ahead… it’s a wild west so sometimes I buy direct otherwise let eBay take the risk…the first I got direct bled out and bubbled the paint ..had to throw it in a bid…looked like flight Bobby version..

FWIW, I've now had 4 of these Chinese specials on previous & current E89. They need painted/colour coded to the car or black if that's your thing. 3M tape application easy peasy. They have a lowered section in the middle so as not to interfere with efficiency of third brake light on boot. Try this link. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264516561107 I paid £80. Decent paint job by a paint shop anywhere from £50 - £100. Although the delivery lead time pushes out to over a month, I was pleasantly surprised when mine arrived in under two weeks. Decided to change the plugs..a lot of internet hype about various ‘necessities’ plug wise on re-mapped and upgraded N54s..

My tuner chap reckons the stock Bosch/BMW 3 claw are as good as with a better idle…so 6 of those babies are going in..

Found some oil in 2 and 3 around the plugs..hoping it’s not the cam box…IMG_0855.jpegIMG_0856.jpegIMG_0854.jpegIMG_0858.jpegIMG_0859.jpegIMG_0857.jpeg

Stuart are these easy to fit? I've just ordered one for the G29 (I know I said I wouldn't have one on the car ).
Easy. Get the spoiler into position and mark it out with masking tape. Then remove the 3M tape and set it back down in position and firmly press it down by hand. Suggest in this cold weather, you perhaps heat the boot area where it's going to sit with a hairdryer or the likes as it'll stick better.

A slow n steady day..

Disconnected all the banjo bolts and drained out all the brake fluid..

Took all four calipers off for minor refurb…2 fronts are Ford Shelby Mustang Brembo 6 pots ..rears are F10 5 series M5 calipers..

Tackled first front strut..

The little tool to force open the bottom clamp on the knuckle is essential..

After many hours of messing around the right hand strut is out.

With the preload backed of there’s no preload on the spring..I thought it had settled.

However once out and the strut on the bench the and spring off the original 60nm/mm spring has not really settled.

Fitted the 80nm/mm spring but need a weird 21mm deep ring thing to be able to lockup the top nut..ordered..

Slowly working my way through a few small bits and bobs on recently acquired Z4.

To date, I’ve put in a new battery, 6 x Spark Plugs and Ignition Packs, new wipers and today just put in two new salmon relays for roof motor.

I’ve ordered two new Magneti Marelli rear lamps from Germany which are arriving on Wednesday. Current lights work fine, but on the bottom of each, on reverse light strip there has obviously been water ingress and they look bit manky!

I’m waiting on new mats for the front, and I’ve also ordered a new spring cap for the rear near side spring. Previous owner had replaced spring it MOT just prior to purchase, but it looks like the spring cap wasn’t re-installed!

EDIT: oh, and 4 x Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 6! Took advantage of current Goodyear cash back promotion!
